Mondi opens investigation into bleaching plant incident at Richards Bay mill

JOHANNESBURG, March 28, 2008 (Press Release) - There was an unexpected incident at the Richards Bay mill today when a filtrate tank within the bleaching plant ruptured, critically injuring two employees.

Both victims were immediately transported to the local hospital where they are receiving care for their extensive burn wounds. The company said that it was too early to provide a prognosis.

An investigation has been launched by Mondi and independent assessors to further investigate the root cause of the rupture. All relevant authorities were informed and the Department of Labour has completed an initial site inspection.

The line could be closed for nine days in which time a replacement of the ruptured tank can be installed. Mondi is however considering alternative "by pass" options which could see the line operating again in 2-3 days.

Ron Traill, CEO of the South Africa division commented, "We were of course shocked by the event this morning. We have adopted world -class best practices in improving our safety record where we aspire to achieve Zero Harm."

He added, "As a further precautionary, Mondi will undertake further detailed inspections on similarly constructed tanks which will be restarted on successful completion."
