Skogn sets the benchmark - The Norske Skog mill near Trondheim, Norway, achieves a new roll wrapping capacity record

A PPI Special Report
Norske Skog's Skogn mill near Trondheim, western Norway, found itself in the record books last October. The facility's Metso Paper StreamLine Pro wrapping machine provided newsprint rolls with kraft wrapper at a capacity of 190 rolls/hr, a new wrapping machine capacity record.
"The new wrapping line meets our expectations and we are pleased with the performance. It gives Norske Skog Skogn the best possible wrapping efficiency in terms of both costs and quality," says the mill's project leader, Johan Kristian Oxaal. "This secures our leading position as a large-volume/low-cost producer of high-quality newsprint," believes Oxaal.
At Norske Skog Skogn, the StreamLine Pro wrapping machine wraps all rolls from the mill's three paper machines, which produce a total of 600,000 tonnes/yr of newsprint.
Two-sided solution
The record-holding wrapping machine is fully automated and features Metso Paper's latest Onesider technology. This divides the wrapping process into two sides - the operational side, which is open for visual roll flow control, and the material side, which is designed to offer optimized wrapping material infeed and replenishment to the wrapping process. A compact, one-sided machine needs considerably less floor space than a conventional multi-station wrapping machine, explains Metso.
The wrapping unit at Skogn is notable for following Metso's non-hydraulic principle: all functions that have traditionally been done with hydraulic cylinders are now performed with electric gear motors. An all-electric system means no hydraulic oil leaks, no hydraulic power units and maintenance, and the elimination of environmental issues typically associated with hydraulics, says the supplier. Control of critical system functions is significantly improved with electric drives, and electric drives also deliver energy savings when compared to hydraulic systems, Metso adds.
According to Oxaal, Norske Skog Skogn mill based its purchasing decision for the wrapping machine on a TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) evaluation, including elements such as design, layout, logistics, ease of operating, energy consumption and investments.
