Siemens to supply drives for world's largest PM at Hainan Jinhai Pulp & Paper

ERLANGEN, Germany, April 4, 2008 (Press Release) - The Siemens Industry Solutions Division is to supply all the drives and electrical equipment for paper machine PM2 of Hainan Jinhai Pulp & Paper Industry Co., Ltd., China. As of May 2009, the new paper machine will produce around one million metric tons of graphic paper per year. This makes it the largest machine of its kind in the world. The order value is in the two-digit million Euro range.

For paper machine PM2, Siemens is supplying 185 Sinamics drive systems with a total connected power output of more than 40 megawatts as well as the drives for roll cutters, re-winders, and offline calenders. The electrical equipment encompasses the entire medium-voltage distribution system for 35 kilovolts and 6 kilovolts as well as all motors and converters. Moreover, Siemens is responsible for all the associated engineering and commissioning services and for supervision of the installation process. With a length of 670 meters, the fine-paper production facility is mainly supplied by Voith Paper Heidenheim.

Hainan Jinhai Pulp & Paper Industry Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of Asia Pulp & Paper, an Indonesian consortium, and is the leading pulp producer in China. On the island of Hainan in the south of China, the company already operates the world's largest pulp line with an annual production capacity of 1.2 million metric tons. For this plant, which started operating at the end of 2004, Siemens supplied the steam turbines and all the electrical equipment.

The main reasons why the contract was awarded to Siemens was the latter's know-how and competence in the fields of pulp and paper manufacture, on the one hand, and plant engineering and service, on the other. The good experience of Hainan Jinhai Pulp and Paper with the pulp line previously equipped by Siemens was another reason.
