Stromsdal chooses Honeywell solutions to improve production efficiency

KUOPIO, Finland, May 27, 2008 (Press Release) - Honeywell today announced that it has been selected to provide its Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS) and Da Vinci™ Quality Control System to Stromsdal Oyj's paperboard plant in Juankoski, Finland. The contract also includes a multi-year Lifecycle Management (LCM) agreement that provides support for Honeywell hardware and software products in the mill until they are modernized or retired. The contract will help Stromsdal increase production efficiency and deliver high quality paper products.

Stromsdal Oyj specializes in the production of high-quality paperboards for graphical and packaging application in more than 30 countries, mainly across Europe. Stromsdal focuses on high-quality and environmentally friendly specialty paperboards and its end products are all fully recyclable and biodegradable.

"We were looking for a solution that would help us improve production speed, cost efficiency and overall effectiveness of the coating process," said Riku Sinisalo, production director of Stromsdal. "We were confident that Honeywell's combination of industry know-how and complete range of products would be able to meet our current and future needs."

Honeywell's total automation solution for Stromsdal's off-machine coating line includes the Experion with PMD Controller automation system and line drives with motors. The solution integrates the advanced automation platform and software applications. For example, the line drives application is implemented using the process control system's common engineering tools. In addition, the automation project includes planning and commissioning. The start-up of the off-machine coating line automation and line drives is scheduled for June 2008.

The new Da Vinci QCS system installed in the plant enables online coating measurements, one of Stromsdal's key requirements for this project. The system provides the industry's most comprehensive suite of online sensors combined with fast scanner and data processing speeds to deliver precise, high-resolution measurements.

The LCM agreement facilitates a seamless and well managed roll out of the Experion and DaVinci QCS systems while allowing Stromsdal to continually update the automation system, maximize asset effectiveness and improve production efficiency in the long term. Honeywell will provide fully integrated support across Stromsdal's business by participating in planning and development of the production processes and project activities, system and solution maintenance.

"Our expertise and experience in the pulp and paper industry demonstrates our ability to deliver a solution that will help Stromsdal meet its stringent production targets and improve customer satisfaction," said Timo Saarelainen, managing director, Honeywell Finland. "The LCM agreement will allow Stromsdal to benefit from continuous support throughout the implementation of these new technologies."
