(Press Release) -
ISRA PARSYTEC the world's leading supplier of surface inspection systems for web products - and the international paper and packaging group have agreed on a multi system delivery of web inspection systems for Mondi's coating plants in Europe.
With this move, the leading manufacturer of paper and packaging materials has underscored its decision to deliver choice quality material. In order to be able to maintain its status as a qualified supplier to its customers, the ability to assure and maintain a high quality standard is absolutely critical for Mondi. Efficient web inspection solutions play a major role in living up to these high demands.
This is why Mondi has been working with the ISRA PARSYTEC inspection technology for the last six years. Because of the great experience they have had with the technology, the paper and packaging group decided to sign an agreement outlining the delivery of several inspection systems which are to be integrated into production machines at various locations. The Mondi Group has been making extensive use of solutions already available for assuring top quality results of their products - even for the most demanding process configurations - and because of the many years of close collaboration between Mondi and ISRA PARSYTEC, the decision to place another order for fully automated web inspection systems was the only logical next step.
Because of the system's ability to offer continuous monitoring and documentation of the individual processing steps at the production lines in real time, Mondi quickly recognized the effective benefits for its own production processes. The inspection systems offer the option to detect or ignore a variety of different web defects on the material's surface. Images of each defect are classified, stored and displayed, and independent defect information is presented for subsequent processing and for determining defect trend information. During the seamless monitoring process of the manufactured material, the system reports problems very early on, which helps to prevent both cost intensive web breaks and also machine downtimes with all the associated additional costs.
At both the locations in Zeltweg (Austria) and in Raubling (Germany), the production managers were able to gather an extensive amount of practical experience over the last few years. The existing inspection systems contribute greatly at both production locations to improving overall product quality. In Zeltweg, Mondi produces PE or aluminum/PE laminated paper on all machines and on the BM3 it also produces PE coated non-woven materials. In this process, the SMASH inspection systems do a great deal to increase production efficiency. Detecting defects is merely a first step in the process - only a reliable classification can in fact bring about the desired benefits. The "Quickteach" software with the ability to teach itself is responsible for classifying the defects. The classifier determines the defect type and defect source quickly and easily. Modern algorithms "train" the system and "teach" it to detect defects even during an ongoing inspection process. This way, the surface inspection system can reach its maximum performance level within the shortest amount of time.
Mondi also produces coated special paper at the Inncoat Extruder line in Raubling. Achieving an optimum quality in the material is the decisive factor during these processes as well. The espresso SMASH solution, a SMASH surface sensor that employs Parsytec software, makes it possible to detect problems in the quality of paper coating and in doing so, plays a role in process optimization. The system's fast reaction options quickly bring about a reduced number of rejects as well as an improvement in overall quality. Optimized quality results plus extensive knowledge about specific defects in turn lead to far fewer web breaks and therefore higher productivity.
"Innovative inspection solutions make it possible to lower our operating costs and to further improve the production quality. The new inspection solutions from ISRA PARSYTEC contribute greatly to these improvements", states Michael Stobl, Operations Director at Mondi Coatings.
