Appleton praises Kroger supermarket chains for using BPA-free receipt paper in grocery stores

APPLETON, WI, May 13, 2011 (Press Release) - Kroger, the nation's largest supermarket chain, recently announced that it would stop using thermal paper receipts containing BPA in their grocery stores. As the largest North American producer of BPA-free thermal receipt paper, Appleton is thrilled to see a major retailer act on customer concerns surrounding the controversial chemical. In 2006, Appleton removed BPA from all of the company's thermal paper products out of concern for consumer safety after several studies linked BPA to health problems in people. Appleton executives hope that other retail outlets and convenience stores will follow Kroger's example and move away from using products containing BPA.

"We believe that Kroger's decision is further evidence that consumers are becoming increasingly aware and concerned about issues surrounding BPA," said Kent Willets, Appleton's vice president of strategic development. "We believe that demand for BPA-free thermal paper will only increase."
