WILMINGTON, DE, May 13, 2011 (Local News) - The DuPont Co. will spend more than $500 million over the next three years to expand production of titanium dioxide, a white pigment used in paper, plastics and paint.

DuPont, the world's leading producer of the pigment known by chemical formula Ti02, is adding 350,000 metric tons of capacity at five sites, including its Edge Moor manufacturing facility north of Wilmington. DuPont would not say how much it's spending at Edge Moor, but said the expansion could mean new hires.

The Wilmington-based company, which employs 8,000 workers in Delaware, has 200 employees and 100 contractors at the Edge Moor Plant, one of its four manufacturing sites in New Castle County. Workers there produce the pigment for the paper industry, which uses it to make paper whiter, brighter and more opaque.
