EPA to begin cleanup of PCP-contaminated former paper mill site in Michigan; claims Georgia-Pacific, International Paper could be liable [From the web]

KALAMAZOO, MI, Aug. 22, 2011 (Local News) - Preliminary work could begin within weeks on a project to remove soil and sediment contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, from Por­tage Creek, U.S. Environmen­tal Protection Agency officials said Thursday.

EPA officials said they are working with the city of Kalamazoo to determine where the agency can access the creek, as well as set up areas to ready contaminat­ed material for transport to landfills.

Workers will focus on nine identified sections of contami­nation totaling 8.2 acres along 1.8 miles of the creek from Al­cott Street north to the con­fluence of the creek and the Kalamazoo River. A small sec­tion of Axtell Creek, from John Street east to Portage Creek, also will be involved.
