Glatfelter paper sludge used in soil reclamation, algae bloom research in Ohio [From the web]

COSHOCTON, OH, Nov. 16, 2010 (Chillicothe Gazette ) - Research being conducted in Coshocton -- and using materials from Chillicothe's paper mills -- could not only have implications for the mining industry, but might provide answers to this summer's algae bloom problem.

The North Appalachian Experimental Watershed -- a part of the USDA Agricultural Research Service -- is experimenting on the application of manure to frozen soils. It's this research by Lloyd Owens that could be used to determine why several Ohio lakes developed algae blooms.

Heidi Hetzel-Evans, ODNR spokeswoman, said a number of Ohio lakes this summer experienced abnormally high blue-green algae growth, which can release four toxins. Some of the state-owned lakes, including Cutler Lake in Muskingum County, were put on advisories that they weren't safe for human contact. Most of those advisories ended by September when the weather started cooling.
