River watchdog group complains about Rayonier pulp mill water treatment in Florida [From the web]

JACKSONVILLE, FL, July 15, 2011 (Florida Times-Union ) - Something smells bad on the Altamaha River, but it's not the fish, the Altamaha Riverkeeper organization says.

The Darien-based watchdog group is complaining that Rayonier, which operates a large paper mill on the riverside near Jesup, is not living up to a promise it made in 2008 to clean up the 50 million gallons of wastewater it dumps into the river each day.

That water, which is drawn from the Floridan aquifer and is used in the process of producing fluff pulp and speciality cellulose fibers used in food and pharmaceuticals, stains the river and smells foul, the Riverkeeper says. Not only that, it makes fish caught downstream from the plant taste and smell so bad that many fishermen won't eat them.
