Georgia county approves bonds for Graphic Packaging’s $140M biomass boiler, turbine project [From the web]

MACON, GA, June 7, 2011 (Press Release) - The Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority agreed Monday to issue revenue bonds for a $140 million expansion at Graphic Packaging International that will include a biomass boiler and 40-megawatt turbine generator at its Macon mill.

The project will reduce energy costs and improve profitability, while reducing its carbon footprint substantially, the company says. The new biomass system, which is expected to be in operation by as early as mid-2013, would generate power from about 400,000 tons of logging residuals -- namely the tops and branches of trees.

The project is expected to create about 10 to 20 jobs at the mill, along with the construction jobs created by the project, authority officials said.

The Macon mill currently makes about 1,600 tons of paperboard each day. The biomass system is expected to make the operation self-sufficient from an electrical and steam power standpoint.
