Gmund completes boiler upgrade at its mill in Tegernsee, Germany

GMUND AM TEGERNSEE, Germany, Aug. 13, 2009 (Press Release) - Already since many years the family-owned company focuses with conviction on sustainable and economic activity and counts as precursor in the industry.

Gmund wants to improve its contribution towards environment protection constantly and succeeded in implementing a new boiler house in June 2009 - so far the biggest single-investment into active environment protection.

From now on the use of natural gas provides the necessary steam for the factory. Thanks to this novelty, Gmund avoids 770 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) per annum. The sulfur dioxide emission has been reduced by 98 % and the nitrogen emission by 68 %. The emission of particulate matter is now almost zero.

With a 2-stage heat exchanger the main part of the warmth gets recovered from the exhaust airstream. It serves to heat the boiler feed water and to preheat the combustion air. The temperature of the exhaust air is then below 90°C.

"We have decided to go for gas, as we can set up the required amount of the steam production exactly according to the demand. Therewith we can avoid any unnecessary energy excess, which arises at the end of the production or in production pauses. At the same time the change to the low-emission natural gas is a tribute to the idyllic production site in Gmund at Lake Tegernsee", says Florian Kohler, owner and president of Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund.
