Harmac Pacific hustles to complete $24M upgrades at BC pulp mill [From the web]

NANAIMO, BC, Oct. 27, 2010 (Vancouver Sun) - About 800 contractors and workers have descended on Nanaimo's Harmac pulp mill to complete $24 million in upgrades and repair work in just two weeks.

The massive work frenzy at the mill is a combination of regular maintenance work that takes place during the annual two-week shutdown of the mill, which ends Nov. 1, and ongoing work related to federal funding earmarked for Harmac from the Green Transformation Fund, intended to improve the mill's energy efficiency and environmental performance.

General manager Paul Sadler said the mill and the current work projects are contributing millions of dollars into the local economy.

"One B.C. pulp mill alone injects about as much money into the local economy as one-quarter the entire export revenue from the province's seafood industry, which is about $200 million annually," Sadler said.
