(Press Release) -
The 131-ton, 6-meter-diameter Yankee cylinder has arrived at Mondi Štětí as the investment in the new PM6 enters its final stage. The new MG (machine-glazed) paper machine from Voith Paper is designed to produce high-quality kraft paper in the 30-90 gsm range. The scope of supply includes a state-of-the-art head box, press section, MG cylinder and leading automation technology. Following the MG cylinder, a soft calender will be installed to provide additional smoothness and gloss to the end product - properties that support our customers' requirements for high-quality flexible packaging and release base papers.
With the new MG grades from Štětí PM6, top-quality packaging paper will be available from the heart of the European market as of October 2009. "This investment is a logical step forward after the PM3 rebuild for White MG grades during 2002. With the new PM6, we now own at Mondi Štětí two world-class MG machines side by side, strategically located in Central Europe to ensure outstanding delivery service and optimised supply-chain management," states Peter Oswald, CEO Mondi Europe & International.
The PM6 investment will also positively influence the surrounding communities through the creation of around 15 jobs for highly qualified engineers, lab technicians and machine operators at the mill. The investment emphasises Mondi's strategy of focusing on low-cost, high-quality assets, as well as its commitment to serving the high-end packaging paper segment. The PM6 further reinforces Mondi's position as a leading supplier of top-of-the-line, bleached, machine-glazed paper for high-end bag applications, flexible packaging and release base papers. In-depth quality control throughout the production process will ensure flawless product quality and extremely consistent paper characteristics.
Since cleaner production plays a key role in Mondi's sustainability commitments, the new investment was planned with the environment in mind. The wood is to be sourced only from certified forests, and the entire integrated production chain, from pulp to finished paper, will comply with the strictest environmental standards. In fact, despite increasing paper production in Štětí, the new PM6 machine will actually improve the environmental performance of the mill, with both water consumption and noise emissions being greatly reduced.
