AbitibiBowater's Coosa Pines pulp plant to sell energy to Alabama Power [From the web]

CHILDERSBURG, AL, July 15, 2011 (Local News) - A contract signed Tuesday between Alabama Power and AbiBow U.S. Inc., says Alabama Power will purchase electricity from a generating facility at the Coosa Pines pulp plant.

The five year contract will provide 15 megawatts of generating capacity, enough power for an estimated 3,750 homes. According to a news release from the Alabama Public Service Commission, the power will be generated using fuel from black tar, a by-product of the pulp making process. Electricity generated at the plant is classified as renewable energy.

"AbiBow will be utilizing their biomass from its wood milling operations and producing renewable energy," said Alyson Fuqua, a spokeswoman for Alabama Power Company. "AbiBow will then provide this renewable energy to Alabama Power."
