NewPage's $208M biomass project approved by Nova Scotia utility agency [From the web]

HALIFAX, NS, Oct. 18, 2010 (The Chronicle Herald) - Burning wood to generate electricity doesn't seem like much of an improvement over burning dirty, old coal, but there is a difference.

If the wood harvesting is done correctly, the forest will be able to replenish itself. Therefore it is considered a renewable resource and it will allow Nova Scotia Power Inc. to reduce the amount of power it produces from non-renewable sources of fuel.

With that in mind on Thursday, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board approved, with conditions, a $208-million project that would result in 650,000 tonnes of wood and wood waste being burned annually in a steam boiler at the NewPage Port Hawkesbury Ltd. paper mill in Point Tupper, Richmond County.
