Pira International has announced the programme for the 4th annual Biorefining for Pulp and Paper Industry conference as well as for 3rd biennial Fibre Engineering, which will take place at the same time and venue allowing delegates to attend both events.
In 2010, the Biorefining conference was purposefully co-located with Pira's biennial Refining conference to offer papermakers a wide-ranging knowledge and networking platform. In order to ensure that brand new and diverse content is provided, this year, the Biorefining event will be run as a dual conference with Pira's Fibre Engineering 2011. Both of these events will take place on 24-26 May 2011 at the Barcelo Sants in Barcelona, Spain.
‘Last year we found that co-locating Biorefining with another paper conference from our portfolio had worked really well. We aim to bring our customers fresh and interesting content every year; this year we chose to run the Fibre Engineering conference alongside Biorefining. Biorefining 2011 agenda will cover a far greater number than ever of case-study contributions from biorefineries and Fibre Engineering 2011 will focus on novel technologies such as nanotechnology and biotechnology, making this dual event the place where papermakers can gain knowledge and valuable contacts for future success,' said Ciaran Little, Head of Events at Pira International.
The event will kick off with a pre-conference workshop on Tuesday 24 March, led by Dr. Thomas E. Amidon, Professor at SUNY ESF, discussing Hemicelluloses and the wood based biorefinery. On the next day, Wednesday 25 March, the Biorefining conference will by chaired by Dr Annita Westenbroek of The Dutch Biorefinery Cluster and present speakers from Pira International, M&G Finanziara SRL - Gruppo Mossi e Ghisolfi, Chemtex, Borregaard, British Sugar Group, SUNNY ESF, TNO Quality of Life, Kompetenzzentrum Holz (Wood K Plus), Bioregional Minimills, Linde-KCA-Dresden and Covey Consulting. Key addresses will analyse the industry and look into Southern Europe's first 2G biorefinery. Following presentations will examine case studies from around the globe.
Day 2 of the Biorefining conference will be chaired by Dr Graham Moore of Pira International and will see talks given by representatives from Dutch Centre of Competence Paper & Board, The Dutch Biorefinery Cluster, Forest-based Sector Technology Platform, VTT Technical Research Centre, Avantium Chemicals, Biofine Technology, Grenoble INP, Alberta Innovates, AIST, CENER, Spanish Research Council and Universidad de Cordoba. Topics discussed will include global biorefining collaboration for the paper industry, biorefining for plastics and chemicals as well as the latest advances in biofuels.
The Fibre Engineering conference will be chaired by Dr Charlie Clarke of SAPPI, Dr Ulla-Britt Mohlin of Innventia, Dr Angeles Blanco of Compultense University of Madrid and by Nigel Jopson of Pira International. On the first day, speakers from SAPPI, Novozymes, Pira International, Mondi Frantschach & Wood K Plus, Innventia, Buckman, Metso Automation, Georgia Institute of Technology, Compultense University of Madrid will discuss the latest methods used by fibre and pulp mills, such as nanotechnology and biotechnology, as well as fibre modification techniques applied to wood fibres. Day 2 will be covered by presentations from North Carolina State University, Aalto University, American Chemical Society, Institute of Larissa, Goerg-August University of Goettingen, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, VTT Technical Research Centre, Alberta Innovates, Swetree Technologies and Kyushu University looking into fibre modification and non-wood fibres.
All delegates will be able to attend both of these events and sit at any presentation from one or the other programme. Various networking breaks and an evening drinks reception will also be shared by attendees of both conferences.
