PORTLAND, OR , Sept. 3, 2010 (RISI) - Production increases among both Coastal and Inland sawmills marked the week ending August 2. According to Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) statistics, total western lumber production amounted to 7.4 bbf through August 2, a gain of 8.2% over the 6.8 bbf produced through the same period a year ago. This increase in production widens the spread in lumber manufacture between 2010 and 2009. In addition, lumber inventories among western producers advanced to 1.12 bbf, an increase of 9.8% over the 2009 level of 1.02 bbf. Higher production and higher inventories imply price pressures in a market of slack demand.
