U.S. housing starts and permits get off to a rough start in 2014, drop below December’s levels



PORTLAND, OR , Feb. 19, 2014 (RISI) - 

U.S. housing starts in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 880,000, down 16% from the revised December estimate of 1.048 million and 2.0% from the January 2013 rate of 898,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Single-family housing starts in January were at a rate of 573,000, down 15.9% from the revised December figure of 681,000 and 6.7% from January 2012. The January rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 300,000, down from 344,000 in December.
