MILL OPERATIONS

Jefferson Smurfit Corp., Wabash, Ind., has ordered a TotalPlant web inspection system from Honeywell-Measurex.

At its Laverne, Tenn., mill, Champion Paper has installed an LP50DH baler from Presona Inc. This horizontal, single-ram extrusion baler marks the eighth such baler ordered by Champion for its U.S. mills.

To upgrade the speed potential of the paper machine at its Battle Creek, Mich., mill, Michigan Paperboard has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of eight new taper cone pulleys.

For the No. 1 and No. 5 tissue machines at its Neenah, Wis., mill, American Tissue Corp. has ordered two Series 4000 slitter rewinders from Toschi SpA. These winders have three unwind stations, a working speed of 1,500 m/min, and an Allen Bradley sectional drive system.

For the No. 3 paper machine at its Grand Rapids, Minn., mill, Blandin Paper has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of a new taper cone pulley.

Consolidated Papers is replacing the No. 88 winder at its Biron Div. in Biron, Wis., with a SoftNip-equipped Beloit SF-A winding system. This new winder system gives Consolidated the ability to wind larger rolls of supercalendered coated grades with consistent roll quality within a set, as well as from set to set.

Imperial Wall Covering Inc., Plattsburgh, N.Y., has placed an order with A&F Corp. for a new paper machine reel and unwind and reel spools. This equipment features tail threading, tear tape transfer, and a doctor assembly.

For the No.1 paper machine at its Brompton, Que., mill, Kruger Inc. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine dryer gearing.

For the No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 tissue machines at its Neenah, Wis., mill, American Tissue Corp. has ordered an MXOpen quality control system and Devronizer moisture control steam showers from Honeywell-Measurex.

For the No.10 paper machine at its Ottowa, Ont., fine paper mill, E.B. Eddy Forest Products has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine dryer gearing.

For the No. 2 paper machine at its Hantsport, N.S., mill, Minas Basin Pulp & Paper has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new paper machine gearing. The new gearing is a result of joint efforts between Minas and Lawton to evaluate and improve the performance of the drive system in the dryer sections.

Merfin International, Delta, B.C., has installed a Model CP-10 screw press from Vincent Corp. The press is used to dewater reject pulp that is collected in a Krofta clarifier. The mill produces hygiene products containing ultra-high absorbency filler.

To process office waste paper into high- quality pulp for tissue, Copamex Planta Uruapan, Uruapan, Mexico, has ordered a complete 120 tpd deinking system from Voith Sulzer.

To upgrade the speed of the No. 3 paper machine at its Cuernavaca, Mexico, mill, Unipak SA, a manufacturer of linerboard and carton materials, has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new mechanical drive components.

Copamex Planta Tissue Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico, has ordered a rebuild of its deinking system from Voith Sulzer.

Industrial Papelera Mexico has ordered new paper machine dryer gearing from the Lawton Co. for its paper mill in Uruapan City in the state of Michoacan.

Shotton Paper Co. plc, Shotton, Wales, U.K., has ordered pre- and post-flotation and fine screening equipment from Voith Sulzer for its new deinking plant. A slot width of 0.12 mm will be used in fine screening to provide maximum stickies removal efficiency.

For its No. 7 paper machine, Myllykoski Paper Oy, Anjalankoski, Finland, has ordered the rebuild of two existing calenders to Voith Sulzer's Janus concept. The rebuild will occur during a shutdown in August 1998.

UPM-Kymmene Oy's Pietarsaari-based Wisapaper mill in Finland has placed an order for Honeywell-Measurex process control and quality control systems. The order is part of the No. 1 paper upgrade project and will update the machine's existing automation systems. Startup is scheduled for autumn of 1998.

Portucel Tejo is planning a project to improve brown stock washing at its Rodao, Portugal, mill. The project, which aims at reducing the amount of COD in the effluent, also includes a mini O2 stage for improving pulp quality. Sunds Defibrator will supply a TwinRoll B press, as well as pumps, a mixer, a screw conveyor, oxygen reactor, tanks, and platforms. Instrumentation, pipe installation, assembly, and startup are included in the Sunds Defibrator delivery. Startup is planned for May 1998.

To process whole log eucalyptus, North Forest Products' Tamar Mill in Long Reach, Tasmania, Australia, has ordered a 9-knife, 153 in. chipper disc and arbor from Acrowood USA. To fulfill the order, Acrowood changed a traditionally 8-knife disc to a 9-knife disc. In addition, the disc is completely fit with stainless steel slot wear liners and end liners. The disc thickness and arbor diameter were also increased to improve the machine's strength.
