Containerboard: DS Smith to shut biomass boiler at Reading, PA, mill

OAKLAND, CA, March 9, 2018 (PPI Pulp & Paper Week) -DS Smith is closing the biomass cogeneration plant that supplies steam and power for the company's adjacent United Corrstack recycled-content corrugating medium mill in Reading, PA.

The Evergreen Community Power LLC plant was built in 2009 for a higher-than-expected $135 million cost.

A company official indicated the power plant is no longer economical to operate, possibly due to lower natural gas prices.

DS Smith acquired Interstate Resources, which owns United Corrstack and the energy plant, last year.
