RANDOM LENGTHS: SYP #4 abundant, tougher sell than higher grades

EUGENE, OR, Aug. 23, 2019 (Through a Knothole) -Prices of Southern Pine #4 dimension lumber plunged to multi-year lows in August amid a four-month slump in which mills have struggled to clear buildups.

Random loadings of #4 2x4 on the eastside, for example, fell to an average of $212 in August, the lowest monthly level since September 2016. Reported prices of this item have fallen steadily since peaking in April at $310. Trends in other widths follow a similar pattern, and hold true in the central and westside zones as well.
