RISI VIEWPOINT: Arauco’s MAPA project will worsen hardwood chip deficit in the Asian markets

On July 24, the Arauco Board of Directors gave approval for the company's MAPA project to proceed. This will install a new 1.56 million tonne per year bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEK) line at its Horcones mill by 2021, replacing an old 295,000 tonne per year line. The increase in hardwood chip demand at this mill will be close to 2.5 million BDMT per year, following on a net increase of about 1.0 million BDMT at Arauco's Valdivia mill, which is being converted to 100% eucalyptus dissolving pulp and scheduled to start up in 2019.
