Transportation: Railroad reports small gains in forest products revenues, lower volumes

OAKLAND, CA, Oct. 6, 2017 (PPI Pulp & Paper Week) -North American rail carriers reported relatively flat to slightly higher forest products freight revenues and mostly lower volumes through the second quarter, with some remarking on competition with trucks and industry plant closures, offset by higher per carload revenues partly due to fuel surcharges.

Canadian National (CN), the biggest forest products rail hauler of the seven Class 1 railroads in North America, reported its pulp and paper freight through 38 weeks of 2017 was off 0.3% to 121,168 carloads, with lumber unchanged at 123,698 carloads. Total forest products volume was down ...
