UPM says Blandin coated paper PM will shut in 1Q; graphic paper hikes gain traction across the board

OAKLAND, CA, Oct. 27, 2017 (PPI Pulp & Paper Week) -UPM said it will permanently shutter one of two coated printing and writing paper machines at its 408,000 tons/yr Blandin mill in Grand Rapids, MN, even as across-the-board graphic paper price increases were mostly being met with little resistance this month where contracts permit.

The closure will remove about 128,000 tons of coated mechanical (CM) grades from Blandin's annual output, which is split roughly 70/30 between 34-lb and 40-lb No. 5 grades, according to RISI Mill Intelligence.
