Voluntary agreement reduces Austria’s plastic bag consumption by 89 million

BRUSSELS, March 16, 2017 (PPI Europe) -A voluntary agreement has considerably reduced the consumption of disposable plastic bags in Austria.

According to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, the agreement, which was signed in July last year, cut the consumption of disposable plastic bags by 15% or almost 89 million units year on year. “This voluntary agreement clearly shows that it does not necessarily take a ban if politics and trade and commerce work together and voluntarily agree on measures to work on consumers’ consciousness,” minister Andrä Rupprechter said in a statement.
