Wood Products: US lumber prices rise from trade, fire, transport issues, strong housing demand

OAKLAND, CA, March 9, 2018 (PPI Pulp & Paper Week) -A lumber shortage pushed prices to record highs as builders stocked up for what is predicted to be a busy construction season, according to contacts.

Lumber prices started climbing last fall after a trade dispute between the US and Canada restricted supply, and fires destroyed significant forest acreage on the West Coast. Now, a shortage of trucks and railcars is forcing homebuilders to pay even higher prices.

"We are in a lumber supply crisis," a lumber broker in Kansas City told theWall Street Journalrecently.
