Anthony Pratt named North American Packaging CEO of the Year
BOSTON, April 20, 2016 (Press Release) – RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry, announced that Anthony Pratt, Chairman & Owner of Pratt Industries will receive RISI’s first North American Packaging CEO of the Year Award.
Pratt is Global Chairman of Pratt Industries in the USA as well as family-owned Visy Industries in Australia, together one of the world’s largest privately-owned packaging, paper and recycling companies. The award will be presented to Pratt at the RISI’s International Containerboard Conference (ICC) taking place from November 2-4, 2016 at the Westin River North Hotel in Chicago, IL
RISI’s packaging economists and editors selected Pratt among industry leaders for the award for his “vision and leadership” in growing Pratt Industries into “one of the largest, lowest cost, and most innovative companies in the North American industry over the past two decades from a virtual startup in this region of the world.
Pratt has built the 6th largest containerboard company in the US with four new greenfield recycled mills and 62 converting plants n only two decades. The latest is the company’s new $260 million 370,000 tons/yr recycled containerboard mill in Valparaiso, IN, which began production last fall. RISI estimates that Pratt Industries now has three of the five lowest cost linerboard mills in North America.
“This has been achieved by a highly focused strategy emphasizing lightweight recycled containerboard packaging and sustainability in a market already dominated by some of the world’s largest and most efficient virgin containerboard producers,” according to Will Mies, editorial director of PPI Pulp & Paper Week and ICC program chairman.
Pratt Industries employs 4000 people in the USA and 5500 in Australasia, where group sales exceed $US3 billion. Pratt has been named Australia’s leading company for environmental performance four times since 2000. Pratt graduated from Monash University, Melbourne, with a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) in 1983. After graduation he joined the consulting firm of McKinsey & Co, before joining Visy under the leadership of his father Richard Pratt.
In 1991 Anthony moved to the United States to spearhead the family’s business expansion into America, where he built Pratt Industries USA into a billion-dollar company which now employs more US citizens than any other Australian company. In 2007 he made a commitment at President Clinton’s Global Initiative in New York City to invest $1 billion in clean energy and recycling infrastructure over the next 10 years.
Pratt is firmly committed to environmental causes, and he and the company have been honored by environmental leaders such as former Vice President Al Gore, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Ted Turner, the Climate Group and Global Green for spreading the word that recycling is an important weapon against climate change. Anthony also sits on the National Board of the Muhammad Ali Museum and Education Center in Louisville, Kentucky, and is active in numerous charity organizations throughout the US and Australia.
