India’s Paper Demand to Drive Growth in Both Production and Imports
Boston, November 17, 2017 (Press Release) – Already one of the world’s largest paper and packaging markets, India’s demand growth for these products should average 3.1% annually through 2022. This strong rate of increase will exceed even China’s over the next five years, according to the Outlook for India’s Paper and Packaging Markets, published this week by RISI, the leading source of market intelligence for the global forest products industry.
“India has about 18% of the world’s population, but represents only 3.3% of its paper and packaging consumption. The conditions are in place for continuing demand growth, as its national literacy rate is rising, along with wealth and population,” said Li Meng, RISI Economist and author of the Outlook. “Also, the infrastructure to support digital media use is still lacking. This will drive increased consumption of graphic papers – even newsprint, for which demand is falling in most countries.”
While India has a well-established paper manufacturing sector, it is unable to meet expanding domestic demand. The conditions that constrain Indian paper output are expected to persist. “India’s producers face high costs for woodfiber and energy, and issues with infrastructure,” said Meng. “As India maintains free-trade policies with other Asian countries, we expect that imports will actually gain market share through 2022.”
Indonesian and Chinese paper producers are among those expected to step up sales to India in coming years. The Outlook for India’s Paper and Packaging Markets analyzes the market conditions facing importers, as well as India’s domestic paper and packaging sector. This first-ever study also explores the outlook for key grades of paper and packaging, including:
- Printing and Writing Paper
- Kraft Paper including Containerboard and Industrial Packaging
