Justin Toland

Justin has been writing about the pulp and paper industry for seven years. A former Editor of Pulp & Paper International (PPI) magazine and Executive Editor of Tissue World, today Justin is a freelance Contributing Editor to PPI magazine and the RISI website. Justin also works as a Senior Editor with the LIFE Communications team on behalf of the European Commission's DG Environment and presents a weekly radio show for FM Brussel. In his spare time he likes to travel and to tread the boards, most recently appearing in the Brussels Shakespeare Society's production of Othello. Justin has an MA from Liverpool John Moores University and a Postgraduate Certificate in Periodical Journalism from the London College of Printing.
Franz Rappold

Mr Rappold graduated in 1977 from "Höhere Technische Bundeslehr- und Versuchsanstalt" in Vienna with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He has worked at Mayr-Melnhof Karton since 1983, and became a Member of the Management Board of Mayr Melnhof AG in 2002. From 1972-83 he was the head of the department Packaging department and Assistant to the General Manager at Austrowaren
Vienna. He was the president of "Pro Carton" Europe until 2005, and currently is the president of Cepi Carton Brussels and the Association of European Cartonboard Producers. He is an executive member of VDP/VMK Germany (Paper + Cartonboard Association).
Rocky Goodnow

Rocky Goodnow has been a timber economist with RISI since 2002. Mr. Goodnow is responsible for the RISI Timber Models, which are used in the analysis of the future demand for wood fiber in North American markets, regional timber supplies, and the potential returns of timberland investments. In addition, he is the key contributor to the analysis and production of RISI's North American Timber Forecast and other RISI timber related publications and studies.
Mr. Goodnow attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he earned both a B.S. in Forestry and a M.S. in Forest Economics and Management.
Scott Howard
Senior Economist, Macroeconomics
RISI
Scott Howard has worked for RISI's Macroeconomic Service for three years. He is the editor of RISI's Monthly Economic Commentary and the Economic Outlook chapters that appear in all RISI forecasts. In addition, Scott has contributed to a variety of multi-client studies and consulting projects and has spoken at RISI conferences in North America, Latin America, and Asia. His primary responsibility is collecting, analyzing, forecasting, and communicating macroeconomic data and its relevance to clients throughout the forest product industry. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Scott currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts.
Kurt Schaefer
Vice President, Fiber
RISI

Kurt's responsibilities at RISI are focused on the area of wood pulp. He publishes a monthly commentary and forecast on the world pulp market, World Pulp Monthly. He also produces to RISI's long-term pulp forecasts, focusing on variables such as pulp consumption, capacity, production, production costs, and pricing. Just prior to joining RISI, Kurt was Director of Pulp & Paper Forecaster. As the sole economist working on Forecaster, he was responsible for forecasting prices and market conditions across all of the major grades of paper and paperboard in North America. His work on Forecaster included developing detailed end-user driven demand models for the key grades, including newsprint, coated papers, and containerboard. He also directed a number of editorial projects, including a major long-term study of global newsprint markets. He reached ABD status in the Ph.D. program in Economics at the University of Virginia.
In 1995, he received the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from the Association of Investment Management and Research (AIMR).
Esko Uutela
Consultant

Esko Uutela was born in Finland and has worked as pulp and paper industry consultant for his whole professional career of more than 30 years. He graduated from the Helsinki School of Economics (Marketing) in 1976 and from the University of Helsinki (Faculty of Forestry) in 1979. Since 1991 he is residing in Germany.
After working for close to 18 years for a large forest industry consulting company in Helsinki and Munich, Mr. Uutela decided to establish his own forest industry consulting company EU Consulting in Starnberg, close to Munich in Germany in August 1994. During the past years, EU Consulting has increasingly specialised in offering consulting services for two sectors: the tissue and recycled fibre businesses. As of March 2007, RISI Inc. of the United States is the new owner of EU Consulting.
Mr. Uutela has carried out numerous private client projects, as well as published regularly worldwide, comprehensive multi-client studies on tissue business developments and global recycled fibre markets.
Sampo Timonen

Sampo Timonen joined RISI in 2008 as the Director of European Graphic Paper. He
is one of Europe's leading Pulp and Paper industry analysts with 10 years of
industry-specific expertise.
Prior to joining RISI, Timonen served as Equity Analyst at Handelsbanken AB, heading up their pulp and paper research. At Handelsbanken, Timonen’s coverage of companies included UPM, Stora Enso, M-real, Norske Skog, Holmen, Ahlstrom and their international peer companies. Before Handelsbanken, he worked as Equity Analyst at Glitnir Bank (FIM Group) for three years. There, he analyzed Pöyry, Kemira and Ruukki Group in addition to those companies mentioned earlier. Previous to Glitnir Bank, Timonen was Research Manager at Oy Keskuslaboratorio Ab (KCL). Responsibilities included project management of Future Watch, a forest industry trend-spotting and SWOT analysis program. Prior to KCL, Timonen served as Market Analyst at Myllykoski Paper Oy, forecasting demand and prices of newsprint, SC and LWC papers. He began his career in 1999 at M-real Kirkniemi mills and M-real (Board Division).
Timonen's analysis is now featured in RISI's European Graphic Paper Forecast, Paper Trader Europe and various Viewpoints and features on RISI's main website.
Ville Henttonen
Product Manager, Cost Benchmarking

Ville Henttonen is a Product Manager in RISI's Cost Benchmarking Services. Ville holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Products Technology from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. Since joining RISI's Brussels office in 2005, Ville has worked on several cash manufacturing cost analyses, using proven methodology to estimate cost competitiveness of existing pulp and paper mills. His recent publications include competitive cost studies of International Coated and Uncoated Woodfree Papers, European Recycled and Virgin Cartonboard, and European Linerboard and Corrugating Medium.
Ken Waghorne
Vice President, Packaging Products

Ken has specialized in the paper packaging markets for RISI since 1983. He provides detailed monthly and quarterly analysis and forecasts of the North American paper packaging markets as well as single- and multi-client studies. His contributions to the RISI multiclient studies include the detailed analysis of the international containerboard
markets, sector-by-sector forecasts for the U.S. folding carton industry, and an analysis of the paper packaging markets for Latin America. Ken holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Economics from Virginia Tech and his Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from LSU.
Duncan Pollard

Born in England, Duncan has an honours degree in Forestry from Aberdeen University in Scotland, and is a Chartered Forester and Chartered Environmentalist. Married with one daughter, Duncan lives in Switzerland, and enjoys skiing, hiking and family holidays.
He started his career in the forestry industry in South Africa and Scotland. In 1985 he joined Shell International where he worked in its forestry division on a variety of projects in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. He was responsible for planning the wood supply for the start-up of the Santa Fe pulpmill in Chile, and was the first operations manager the Shell/UPM plantation project in Uruguay.
In 1995 he joined Scottish Woodlands Ltd as Development Manager, with responsibilities for timber marketing, developing new business in Eastern Europe, and implementing ISO9000/14001 and FSC certification.
In 2001, Duncan joined WWF International as Head of the European Forest Programme, and in 2006 he became the Director of the Forests for Life Programme, directing WWF’s global work on forests. During this time he strengthened the business engagement and led a refocusing of the programme to tackling global deforestation.
In 2007 Duncan became the Director of Conservation Practice & Policy Division. It has responsibility for major programmes working with industry on water, energy, paper, timber, palm oil, and shipping. It also leads WWF’s policy work with the EU, UN institutions and the World Bank; coordinates WWFs species conservation activities; and ensures that there are consistent approaches to WWF’s work across a diverse range of subjects such as oil & gas, finance, poverty & conservation, and bioenergy.
Teresa Presas

Teresa Presas was born in 1952 in Portugal and has a degree in psychology from the Instituto de Psicologia Aplicada, Lisbon. From 1972 to 1974 she worked for the Consumer Research Department of Lintas International.
She has worked as a journalist for the Semanario Expresso in Lisbon and has also worked on external & international relations at the Portuguese Film Institute.
Ms. Presas entered into the paper industry in 1982 as Director of Communication and Marketing Services for Tetra Pak Portugal. She later went on to become Director of Communication and Environment for Tetra Pak Europe and then, Vice President of European Affairs for Tetra Pak Europe and Africa and Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs for Tetra Pak International.
Between 1991 and 2003 she was member of the Board and Executive Committee of various organisations including, ACE (the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), ASSURE (Association for the Sustainable Use and Recovery of Resources in Europe) and EUROPEN (European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment). During that period she was vice-chairperson of the European Commission Consultative Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development.
Teresa Presas became Managing Director of CEPI in September 2003.
Peter Berg
Director of Knowledge
Paper & Forest Products Practice, McKinsey & Company

Peter Berg is the Director of Knowledge for McKinsey & Company’s global Paper & Forest Products Practice. In this role, Peter is responsible for McKinsey’s knowledge development in the industry. He also coordinates the industry-specific support to McKinsey’s project teams around the world and advises teams and clients. In the past several years, Peter has published articles in several trade journals and presented McKinsey’s view on the forest products industry at industry conferences. Although active in many different fields his current favorite topics concern the developments in climate change and bio-energy connected to the forest products industry.
Peter joined the Stockholm office of McKinsey in 1992 and worked with companies in several sectors, including telecom, transportation, and energy, before focusing completely on the forest products industry from 1995. He earned his MBA from INSEAD in 1994 and also holds a Master of Science degree in Materials Engineering from the University of Houston as well as a Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics from Uppsala University.
Stig Andersen

Stig Andersen, born in 1960, holds a Ph.D in Forestry Economics and an MBA. He joined Nordea Markets in 1994, and worked 10 years as an equity analyst, primarily covering the Nordic paper & forest products (P&FP) sector. In 2005, he moved to Nordea Corporate Merchant Bank, where he is currently employed as a Senior Industry Analyst, covering the P&FP sector – on a global basis, along with Renewable Energy – primarily on a Norwegian basis. Prior to joining Nordea, he worked with corporate finance – and has also spent one year working as a forester. When not working he enjoys time with family, along with steep mountaineering.
Christian Rynning-Tønnesen

Christian Rynning-Tønnesen joined Norske Skog in 2005 as CFO. He became president and CEO of the company in 2006. Before joining Norske Skog, he was in various positions mainly associated with the energy business, including as a refinery analyst and product coordinator with Esso Norge and a consultant with energy specialist McKinsey. Before joining Norske Skog, Rynning-Tønnesen was vice president, strategic planning, strategy and finance for North European supply and market for Statkraft.
Salim W. Karadsheh

Mr. Salim W. Karadsheh is CEO of the Nuqul Group of 27 trading and industrial companies employing 5,500 employees in 11 MENA countries and USA.
Born in 1962 he read Engineering at Bath University in Britain and joined Nuqul Group in 1986 where he assumed several positions through which he actively participated in the construction four tissue mills and a modern converting plant in Jordan and Egypt.
Since his Appointment as CEO in 2004 the Nuqul Group underwent a major reorganization of management, technology, strategy, organizational structure and operating model and is currently setting up subsidiaries in Iran and Algeria.
Mr. Karadsheh is married and has one son and a daughter.

Orifjon Abidov started his career at RISI in 2007 as a Research analyst for European forecasting group. He is in the process of taking over responsibilities of European paper packaging analysis of RISI. He contributes to detailed monthly and quarterly analysis and forecasts of the European paper packaging markets. Orifjon holds Master of Science degree in Applied Economics from Brussels University and Bachelor of International Business from Tashkent University of Economics.
Jukka Kuntonen

Jukka holds a Master of Science degree in Forest Products Technology from
Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. He has completed supplementary
studies in the field in US at Miami University, OH, as well. Jukka Kuntonen
joined RISI in 2008 as a Benchmarking analyst. Jukka has worked with cash
manufacturing cost analyses, using proven methodology to estimate cost
competitiveness of existing pulp and paper mills. His recent publications
include competitive cost studies of European pulp grades and mechanical
papers. He has also been closely involved of developing new methodology and
tools for capital cost analyses.
Martyn Eustace

During his career in the paper industry, Martyn Eustace has gained a wealth of experience having held a variety of senior management positions.
Martyn spent 30 years working for Howard Smith Paper, now part of the PaperlinX Group, where most recently he held the position of Chief Executive Officer.
In 2004 Martyn was recruited by Map Merchant Group to the position of Chief Executive Officer of Premier Paper Group, where he was responsible for leading a management team who conducted a highly successful business recovery and turnaround.
Martyn is now Managing Director of Newvizion, an independent business consultancy, and Director of Two Sides, an initiative by companies from the Graphic Communications supply chain including Forestry, Pulp, Paper, Inks and Chemicals, Pre Press, Press, Publishing and Printing. ‘Two Sides’ seeks to dispel common environmental misconceptions surrounding Print and Paper whilst encouraging its responsible use; also providing users with factual information enabling Print and Paper to remain the preferred, environmentally sustainable, communications medium.
Martyn is a member of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Turnaround Panel and was President of the National Association of Paper Merchants (NAPM) from 2002-2004, and has also served on the Board of EUGROPA, the European Paper Merchants Association.
Ernst Brunbauer

Ernst Brunbauer graduated from the University of Technology in Graz and started his career with Neusiedler in Austria, followed by a work experience with BOISE Cascade in the US. Learning more about the Art of coating led him to join Brigl&Bergmeister AG in Austria where he was involved in the acquisition of Vevce mill in Slovenia and Szolnok mill in Hungary. He was then joining Trierenberg Group of Austria with the then subsidiaries Feurstein, Wattenspapier and Tannpapier as a mill manager. He was then serving eight years as Board member and COO of that group.
Rapid growth, both, generic as well as by acquiring several companies like Olsany or Tervakoski, just to name the most important characterised this period.
Since March 2008 he works as General Manager of Lenzing Papier GmbH in Austria.

Sappi, the world's leading producer of coated fine paper, appointed Berry Wiersum (51, British) Chief Executive Officer
of Sappi Fine Paper Europe (SFPE) on 15 January 2007.
Mr Wiersum started his career at ICI Fibres, became President of Amoco Fabrics (Europe), then the
President of Amoco Chemicals (Europe), and when Amoco was taken over by BP, he moved to BP to assist
with the integration of the two groups in Europe. He subsequently left BP and joined Pechiney S.A. in France
and ran the CEBAL packaging division until he was recruited as Managing Director of the Packaging division
of Kappa Packaging BV (The Netherlands) and member of the Management Board responsible for paper manufacture
and packaging in the Kappa group. He holds a Master of Arts degree with Combined Honours in Mediaeval and
Modern History and subsidiaries in French and Music from the University of St Andrews in the UK.
