Preparation began in September 2012 and certification was awarded in March of this year.
The Bristol-based folding carton plant, which produces carton multi-packs for the UK's beverage and food markets, was already in the process of adopting high standard of practice focused on waste streams and environmental compliance. However, as highlighted in the operational excellence initiative, there was additional value in pursuing a more strategic and structured approach to achieve world class standards in an environmental management system.
"With the achievement of this standard, our operation is well aligned with MWV's long standing commitment to continuously improve the sustainability of our business year after year," shared Bristol plant manager Andrew Chisholm. "Delivering positive environmental performance is good for our shareholders, our customers, the communities and our employees. Going forward we plan to enhance our sustainability credentials using the environmental management system as the platform."
With current certifications in place for ISO 9001 Quality, BRC Global Standard for Packaging, and SFI, PEFC, and FSC Chain of Custody, it was also logical to integrate all the systems. Through application of the ISO standard, the Bristol facility has reduced the number of certification audits from 4 to 1, and lowered associated audit costs.

This prestigious award, given for the first time, was presented to Mr. Lemaire before more than 500 guests gathered as part of Corporate Knight's 12th annual gala which reveals and honours Canada's best 50 corporate citizens.
A director who has always prioritized resources
The candidacy of the person who co-founded Cascades and who lead the company for nearly 10 years, taking over from his brothers Bernard and Laurent, was unanimous among the jury members. The jury was made up of leaders from Canada's five most recognized environmental organizations: Équiterre, the David Suzuki Foundation, World Wildlife Fund-Canada, Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Pembina Institute. According to Toby Heaps, President of Corporate Knights, "the jury recognized in Alain Lemaire a man who has a number of environmental achievements to his credit. Among these, the ongoing concern to prioritize recycled fibres over virgin wood fibres as a raw material; the development of strategic partnerships to offer Cascade's expertise, namely in energy efficiency and in the management of waste materials; and lastly, the continued willingness to improve the company's results with regard to water and energy consumption."
"This recognition is an exceptional way to conclude my experience as head of the family business that we founded close to 50 years ago. I am also honoured to be the first recipient of this prestigious award," said Alain Lemaire. "I would like to congratulate the other nominees and thank the members of the jury, but also to salute Corporate Knight's initiative for having created this award. Corporate leaders are often recognized for their management style and economic achievements, but rarely for their environmental accomplishments," he added.
Founded in 1964, Cascades produces, converts and markets packaging and tissue products that are composed mainly of recycled fibres. The Company employs more than 12,000 employees, who work in over 100 modern and versatile production units located in North America and Europe. With its management philosophy, close to half a century of experience in recycling, and continuous efforts in research and development as driving forces, Cascades continues to deliver the innovative products that customers have come to rely on. Cascades' shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange, under the ticker symbol CAS.

VallviksBruk AB, located about 200 km (125 miles) north of Stockholm, produces softwood kraft pulp and chemical pulp for export. A tour of the mill shows that the relationship with ABB is firmly rooted. It contains many types of ABB instruments, originating from known quality manufacturers linked to ABB, Fischer & Porter, Hartmann & Braun and Alfa Laval, to name a few.
"There are an incredible number of flows in this kind of plant and we have almost always bought instrumentation from ABB. Only the best will do," says Ronny Svensson, supervisor for the instrumentation workshop where about ten people maintain the mill instrumentation.
Increased environmental requirements
The pulping process consumes plenty of water. Previously the water was purified in the mill's mechanical treatment plant. This is a large, open rotation basin where the sludge is separated from the water.
Some years ago, increased environmental requirements led to a major investment in a biological treatment plant. It was completed and commissioned in November 2011.
Biological treatment means that the process water is purified by means of micro-organisms. Not only can the organic substances be removed by bio-degradation, but also inorganic salts of nitrogen and phosphorus can be degraded.
The dirtiest water goes into the biological treatment plant. The mechanical treatment plant is still used for water needing little treatment, explains Svensson.
	Plastic tokens carry bacteria
The production of chemical pulp requires a high temperature for the pressure cooker to release the wood fibers and for bleaching and washing the fiber. The warm so-called "back water" comes to the biological treatment plant via two large tanks, each with a volume of 1,355 cubic meters (48,000 cubic feet). As the water temperature drops from 60-70° C to 37° C (140-158F to 99.5F), the ideal temperature level for biological treatment, oxygen is added while stirring the tanks to keep the bacteria alive. Also added are lots of so-called carriers, namely small plastic tokens, to which the bacteria can cling to aid their proliferation.
The next step is the coagulation basin where nutrients and iron sulfate are pumped in to really start up the degradation process. Also polymers are added to help separate the sludge by flocculation. After that the water enters the rotating basin where the sludge is separated mechanically. Finally the water is squeezed out of the sludge and the remaining waste product looks like horse manure. It is used as an ingredient in particular topsoil or pellets. VallviksBruk AB produces approximately six containers a week of the waste sludge.
New filter presses
In the various stages flowmeters keep track of levels and additives in the process.
"We are still optimizing the installation performance in terms of additives, but the instruments have functioned as they should," says Svensson.
The extensive water consumption at the plant would actually require a much greater biological purification process than VallviksBruk AB has invested in so far. The reason that the biological treatment suffices is the installation of two new filter presses, supplied by Metso Finland. The filter presses dewater the pulp much more efficiently.
The flows at the new filter presses are controlled by ABB flowmeters. ABB pressure sensors measure the pressure in and out of the filter presses, which reduce the volume of water to be treated by half.
"Without the filters it would have been impossible to create cost-efficient bio-treatment," says Svensson.
FACTS
VallviksBruk AB
is one of two mills in the Swedish Rottneros Group. The mill has about 160 employees and a production capacity of approximately 240,000 tons per year. Products produced at VallviksBruk AB are bleached kraft pulp ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) and UKP (Unbleached Kraft Pulp).
ABB
has supplied instrumentation for flow, pressure, temperature, level and analysis. Included are 55 electromagnetic flowmeters in different dimensions, approximately 20 pressure sensors in the 260 series, 12 temperature sensors with transmitters and an FSM 4000 electromagnetic flowmeter, AC.

In a large independent comparison of companies listed on the NASDAQ OMX Nordic Large Cap-list SCA was awarded "Best Sustainability Report 2012".
The comparison was done by Swedish independent environment publication MiljöRapporten together with an expert jury consisting of CSR- and sustainability professionals. All 58 companies on the Large Cap-list was part of the comparison. Among them are global companies like Volvo, Ericsson and H&M.
SCA received the jury's vote because of the reports strong connections between business values, sustainability and civil responsibilities. The jury also considered SCAs report as something other companies should use as an example when shifting from dutiful reporting to strategic sustainable work.
"This is good news that proves our long-term strategic sustainability work is paying off. For SCA, sustainability is an integral part of our business model and our operations. All our employees take a part of our sustainability efforts, from raw material sourcing, product development and manufacturing, all the way down to our customers and consumers," says SCA´s SVP Corporate Sustainability Kersti Strandqvist and continues:
"We have increased our measureable goals from four to eleven in the 2012 report because we believe it's a good way to ensure delivery. We also know that our consumers and customers have high demands on transparency and sustainability and we strive to live up to these high standards."
SCA has published its sustainability report since 1998 and this was not SCAs first award for the sustainability reporting. In 2012 SCA was awarded "Best sustainability report 2011" by Swedish FAR, the professional institute for authorized public accountants.

Parties were unable to reach mutual agreement on a workable plan to jointly further conservation efforts while balancing environmental, social and economic considerations in the Canadian boreal forest.

Environmental groups suspend further work with Resolute Forest Products under Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement

On the third anniversary of the signing of the historic Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA), environmental signatories are suspending further work with Resolute Forest Products. They remain committed to continuing their work with other signatory companies to plan for protection of critical Boreal woodland caribou habitat and sustainable forest management practices.
"We are very pleased with the groundbreaking solutions for conservation we have forged under the CBFA with companies such as Tembec, Alberta Pacific Forest Industries, and Millar Western Forest Products in northeastern Ontario and Alberta respectively," said Janet Sumner of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS).
"We are also optimistic about advancing conservation and sustainable forestry plans through our on-going work with Tolko, Weyerhaeuser, and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland.
"However, despite three years of work we feel we have not been able to make meaningful progress towards science-based conservation and sustainable forestry plans with Resolute Forest Products on its large tenures in Quebec and Northwestern Ontario. After creating and revising numerous conservation analyses, and putting several workable proposals on the table, we have come to the sad conclusion that Resolute will not do the minimum that the science says is required to protect our forests and the threatened caribou that call them home," adds Sumner.
"We believe that Resolute is not meeting its commitments to ensure caribou survive on the forests it manages. In our opinion, it has so far proven itself unwilling to strike a balance between its economic interests and the local survival of a nationally threatened species," added Todd Paglia of ForestEthics.
The environmental groups' assessment, based on federal government science, is that Resolute's forestry plans would severely diminish the chances that any caribou herds within their tenures will survive after their logging operations. The federal recovery strategy under the Species At Risk Act requires that all caribou herds in Canada be managed to create a minimum likelihood of 60% survival.
All environmental signatories to the CBFA are suspending further work with Resolute until it can commit to scientifically defensible conservation plans that would give caribou a reasonable chance of survival.
"The CBFA has proven itself a workable model with companies that honour their commitments. Last year, signatories announced a joint caribou action plan for northeastern Ontario that proposed an 8,000 km2 logging-free zone to protect critical caribou habitat and an increase of wood supply for local mills," adds Sumner.
In Northeast Alberta, signatories supported the establishment of the proposed Dillon River Wildland Park and the Gipsy-Gordon Wildland Park, and this month have agreed on an approach for Caribou Action Planning in the Athabasca and Cold Lake regions. They are now commencing outreach to Provincial, Aboriginal, municipal and energy sector leaders to move forward.
The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement was signed in 2010 by all member companies of the Forest Products Association of Canada and nine environmental groups. Environmental groups continuing to implement the CBFA are the Canadian Boreal Initiative, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, David Suzuki Foundation, ForestEthics, Ivey Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and the International Boreal Conservation Campaign.

The tool is located at: label.averydennison.com/en/home/solutions/sustainability.html.
"Many of our customers are actively improving their sustainability footprint," said Rosalyn Bandy, sustainability manager, Avery Dennison Materials Group. "We have created this matrix recycling tool as a response to those looking to reduce their impact by sending less waste to landfills."
The interactive map features a directory that indicates locations of non-landfill operations or energy-from-waste facilities. Most of these operations process discarded pressure-sensitive scrap materials generated by label presses into clean, renewable energy sources. One such method is fuel pellets, which can be a direct substitute for coal but with a lower carbon and overall emissions footprint.
The interactive tool is based on Avery Dennison's own information and was developed in collaboration with key converters, recyclers and key channel partners. Recycling may not be available in all areas.

Partnering with Econvert of The Netherlands, a firm whose partners have over 30 years' experience in anaerobic wastewater treatment, Beckart will provide the North American industrial market with proven treatment design, manufacturing and service since 1978.
Econvert systems emphasize a wastewater-to-energy approach that saves money and creates a resource for manufacturers and industrial customers; the anaerobic wastewater treatment systems continuously convert BOD, COD and sludge in wastewater streams to biogas, which can be subsequently used as a secondary energy source (to run a boiler or kettle, for example).
Econvert systems feature a vertical design, greatly reducing floor space requirements. In some applications, they can be retrofitted into existing wastewater aeration systems, saving space and reducing energy-related aeration expenses. Aeration expenses and sludge generation are reduced in proportion to the reduction of BOD and COD (typically about 80%-90%). Additionally, biomass accumulated in the reactor tank will often have a saleable value.
A full range of sizes are available for variable loads, and are suitable for loads from approximately 660 lbs COD/day or 440 lbs BOD/day. Individual systems can treat up to 52,000 lbs COD/day. Other standard features include a modular approach for increasing flows at expanding facilities, congestion-free influent system, gas-tight reactor and recirculation pipe to minimize odor, adjustable, independent upflow configurations, and touch-screen controls panels.

"Maintaining sustainable business practices is part of our identity," said Dave Wallace, xpedx director, Sustainability. "Our commitment is to deliver products our customers want while ensuring responsible stewardship of natural resources for generations to come."
Sustainable Leadership
xpedx enhanced its Sustainability Survey and Scorecard for 2013 and will expand engagement to suppliers that represent 75 percent of its purchases. The Survey and Scorecard evaluate the role that sustainability plays among xpedx suppliers in three areas of corporate commitment, key sustainability indicators and collaborative potential.
Sustainable Operations
For 2013, xpedx, as a part of IP's recently published sustainability goals, has established a goal to earn the ENERGY STAR at seven new locations. ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program that helps businesses save money and protect the climate through energy efficient business practices. To earn the ENERGY STAR, xpedx locations must score in the top 25 percent of comparable facilities nationwide for energy efficiency, based on the EPA's energy performance rating system. Qualified facilities meet strict energy performance standards, use less energy, are less expensive to operate and cause fewer greenhouse gas emissions than peer facilities. xpedx has already earned the ENERGY STAR at 20 locations in previous years.
This year, xpedx will continue its work to expand recycling in its facilities and will implement tracking of diversion rates at all locations in a drive to reduce landfill materials. In 2012, xpedx recycled 3,492 tons of paper, plastic, board and other materials.
During 2013, xpedx also aims to earn Green GlobesTM at another one of its locations. The Green Globes assessment and rating system is a third party program that is used to evaluate green building design, operation and management. The xpedx facility in Nashville has previously earned a two Green Globes rating.
In 2013, xpedx will also continue to operate as a SmartWay® Transport Partner. SmartWay is an EPA program that seeks to reduce greenhouse gases and other air pollutants and improve fuel efficiency. As a company participating in the SmartWay Transport Partnership, xpedx is measuring the current environmental performance of its fleet of 715 trucks and committing to improve the fleet's performance. By defining clear and achievable goals for its delivery operations, xpedx is actively addressing greenhouse gas emissions and air quality.
Additionally, xpedx is continuing a policy regarding the use of paper in which 100 percent of its product line catalogs and a minimum of 90 percent of its marketing materials only use paper certified to either the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standards. In addition, xpedx is implementing sustainable procurement policies regarding the purchase of food service and other related materials such as towels and tissues for internal use.
Sustainable Choices
xpedx continues to offer one of the most extensive lines of sustainable products that meet recognized third party standards. These products are backed by field experts and are supported by extensive reporting capabilities that give customers the information they need to track and meet their established sustainability goals.
