IFC's Sustainable Forestry Program was launched today at a workshop organized to address key challenges and increase investment in sustainable forest plantations. The workshop was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia, top executives of Indonesia's forest concession companies, and leading nongovernmental organizations engaged in the sector.
Indonesia reportedly is the third-highest emitter of greenhouse gas in the world. Nearly 85 percent of this is from land-use change and deforestation. "This new program is part of IFC's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emission," said Adam Sack, IFC Country Manager for Indonesia. "Establishing sustainable timber plantations on degraded land has several benefits. It reduces greenhouse-gas emissions, brings the land back into productive use, and produces much-needed jobs in rural areas."
Indonesia's natural forest area has declined significantly, creating a growing climate change challenge and new obstacles to promoting sustainable forestry practices. Today, there are 96 million hectares of degraded land in Indonesia, at least 8 million of which is coarse grassland. IFC's Sustainable Forestry program in Indonesia promotes sustainable forestry practices by helping companies find ways to profitably establish sustainable plantations on degraded land, and reduce costs associated with these plantations.
The program will measure its progress through five- year targets of expanding plantation on degraded land by at least 250,000 hectares, generating employment opportunities for 90,000 people in rural areas, and reducing carbon emissions by a minimum of 90 million tons.
To achieve these targets, the program will work through a three-pronged approach-reducing greenhouse-gas emissions through commercial rehabilitation of degraded lands, improving the business environment for forest plantation investment, and increasing certified forest plantation areas.
IFC Advisory Services in Indonesia are supported by the governments of Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Switzerland.
IFC is the only international financial institution focused exclusively on the private sector, the engine of sustainable development in emerging markets. It is currently seeking a capital increase to strengthen its ability to create opportunity for the poor in developing countries-including by supporting sustainable forestry practices in Indonesia.

Over 300 people from the nearby Teluk Meranti community arrived to stop police removing Greenpeace activists who have been taking direct action in the area to expose and prevent forest and climate destruction. In a surprising move, the district chief of police subsequently revoked an eviction order and permitted Greenpeace to stay. "We are overwhelmed and humbled by this extraordinary support from forest communities. It confirms our belief that the people of Indonesia want their forests to be protected," said Bustar Maitar, Greenpeace Southeast Asia forest campaigner. "This sends a very important signal to President Yudhoyono, that his people are willing to help him honour his pledge to cut Indonesia's massive CO2 emissions by stopping deforestation. He should take immediate action to prosecute those who are destroying forests and instead protect our forests, as well as the biodiversity and people who depend on them." Greenpeace opened the camp on the threatened Kampar Peninsula in Sumatra, Indonesia three weeks ago to call on world leaders to end global deforestation, one of the main causes of climate change. The camp has received visits of support by celebrities such as ‘Inglourious Basterds' star Melanie Laurent, Indonesian folk-rock star Iwan Fals, as well as a visit from the US Ambassador to Indonesia. Indonesian police and immigration authorities are also in the process of deporting 11 international Greenpeace activists who participated in a non-violent direct action on Thursday. Several activists unfurled a huge banner in an area of freshly destroyed rainforest that read: "Obama: you can stop this", while others locked themselves to seven digging machines owned by pulp and paper company, Asia Pacific Resource International Holdings ( APRIL ), to prevent it destroying the forest and illegally draining the carbon rich forest peat soil in order to grow plantations. The non-violent direct action was intended to remind world leaders, particularly President Obama who is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation meeting in Singapore today that, as well as committing to far deeper emissions cuts and to a fair, ambitious and legally binding treaty at the UN Climate Summit, they must also provide the funds needed to end global deforestation. Global deforestation accounts for about a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions and has led Indonesia to become the world's third largest climate polluter, after China and the US. Indonesia's rainforest peat soils are particularly rich in carbon; the Kampar Peninsula alone contains some 2 billion tonnes and is one of the planet's largest natural carbon stores. "While President Obama blocks progress at the climate talks, we will continue to take action at the frontline of forest and climate destruction. He and other world leaders have just weeks left to avert a climate catastrophe by making far deeper emissions cuts and committing to a fair, ambitious and legally binding treaty that includes the funds needed to end global deforestation at December's UN Copenhagen Climate Summit," said Maitar.

UPM recognised for climate change disclosure

UPM is featured in Nordic Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI 2009 Nordic). This index is based on Carbon Disclosure Project's (CDP) analysis on 200 Nordic companies. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure based on the responses to CDP's questionnaire which focuses on greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets and risks and opportunities associated with climate change.
The CDLI Nordic comprises the top scoring 10% of companies in CDP's Nordic 200 analysis. High scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.
As a bio and forest industry company, UPM has several strengths related to the carbon lifecycle. UPM's business is based on sustainable raw materials, recyclable products with low carbon footprint and renewable low carbon energy sources. Since the early 1990's, UPM has invested over one billion euros in new mill site biomass-fired power plants and recovery boilers. These long-term investments have reduced fossil CO2 emissions by 40% per tonne of paper.
"We have a very good track record when it comes to reducing green house gases. For example changes in the fuel mix and improved energy efficiency resulted in a 12% decrease in fossil CO2 emissions per tonne of paper in 2008 compared to 2007", said Anja Silvennoinen, Senior Vice President of UPM's Energy Business Area.

It confirmed the earlier conclusions of the Environment Council of 21 October.
The European paper industry welcomes this approach and is pleased to see a real understanding of what is at stake for European industry and encourages the European leaders to maintain this position during the negotiations.
"We believe that the European Council's support of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 4th assessment report which concluded that a sustainable forest management strategy, aimed at maintaining or increasing carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, will generate the largest climate change mitigation benefit, is a major recognition for our sector" said Teresa Presas, managing director of CEPI.
"We are pleased to note that the Council reiterates the role the forest products sector can play globally in meeting the challenges that lie ahead and that it considers early actions by our industry as part of the solution to mitigate climate change," she added.
Including harvested wood products in a global agreement and making reference to sustainably produced wood products as a climate friendly material are positive steps forward. Developing the robust, transparent and consistent data and methodologies needed will require much work in the coming year.
Besides forestry, the EU targets, financing and carbon leakage positions which are also of great interest to the EU pulp and paper industry.
More than ever, Europe needs to reconcile competitiveness and sustainability for its industry to thrive in a global market. Meeting this challenge depends largely on policy makers and their decisions in Copenhagen and beyond. A comparable burden between our European companies and their global competitors is the only way forward.
The pulp and paper industry practices sustainable forest management, pursues security of energy supply through renewable energy, and optimises resources through the highest recycling rates in the world. It is a significant provider of employment, and adds economic value through the constant harnessing and updating of new technologies. Our industry model and its natural cycle may hold the path to reach society's aims for business responsibility, climate change solutions, sustainable use of natural resources, expanded use of renewable resources and markets that respect nature.
"We urge the European Union to remain strong and to keep its position to ensure that Europe maintains its global position whilst delivering clear leadership on climate change," concluded Ms Presas.

As a renewable resource company Sappi welcomes the opportunity to become involved in a global solution focused on making the transition to a low-carbon economy." Ralph Boëttger, chief executive officer, Sappi Limited.
The Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate Change was launched by the Prince of Wales' Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change, which is convened by the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership. The Communiqué is a private sector call for "an ambitious, robust and equitable global deal on climate change that responds credibly to the scale and urgency of the crises facing the world today".
In each region where Sappi operates, we have been working with industry bodies to examine ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing our use of renewable energy. As responsible corporate citizens in an energy-intensive industry, one of Sappi's primary goals is to reduce our carbon footprint by improving energy efficiencies and decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels. We are achieving this by streamlining transport systems, making process changes, installing more efficient equipment, reducing purchased energy (electricity and fossil fuel) and by increasing the use of renewable energy - an approach which ultimately results in a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
We have made steady progress, with CO2 emissions globally per ton of product produced declining since 2005. In North America, between 2004 and 2008 we achieved a reduction of 27% in total energy use per ton of product produced. In this region, more than 75% of all energy used is derived from renewable resources (black liquor, bark, sludges and purchased biomass). The percentage of energy derived from renewable resources for South Africa is 38.1% and for Europe is 31.8%, with our global figure standing at 48.6%. The figure for South Africa will increase to over 50% once the Saiccor expansion project is fully operational.
In addition to focusing on energy efficiency and reduction of GHGs at manufacturing sites, we ensure that owned, lease and managed land as well as land from which wood is procured, is independently certified as being sustainably managed.
It has been established that well-managed forests can play a significant role in climate mitigation, as pointed out by the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007, which found that: "In the long term, a sustainable forest management strategy aimed at maintaining or increasing forest carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, fibre or energy from the forest, will generate the largest sustained mitigation benefit".
Boettger commented, "Our signing of the Copenhagen Communiqué will add impetus to our commitment, established in terms of our Sustainable Development Charter, and confirmed by our 5th place on the Leadership Index of the 2009 Carbon Disclosure Project and inclusion in the list of top companies as regards our GHG mitigation and adaptation actions, to reduce GHG emissions and increase our use of renewable energy. We look forward to fresh insights and international co-operation that will help us live up to these commitments".

The Report, prepared in accordance to the G3 guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative at the highest 'A+' level is a voluntary and transparent disclosure of the Company's sustainability initiatives and its contribution to building economic, environmental and social capital to secure the long term interests of its stakeholders. Recognising the challenges of climate change and global warming and its impact on competitiveness, ITC has adopted decisive strategies to progress its own efforts to support national and international endeavours in mitigating the effects of climate change. ITC is 'carbon positive' for 4 consecutive years, currently sequestering twice the amount of carbon that emitted from its operations. For 7 years, it has also sustained its 'water positive' status, creating rainwater harvesting potential that is more than twice that consumed by the Company. Irrigating water stressed areas is a critical need following the impact of climate change on India's farming sector. ITC's sustainable agricultural practices also help farmers adapt to the vagaries of climate change.
The four pronged strategy implemented by ITC includes identifying climate change risks in various ITC businesses and implementing adaptation measures, improving competitiveness through innovations in products and technologies, minimising its GHG emissions by achieving minimum specific energy consumption in each of its businesses as well as expanding its renewable energy portfolio and enlarging its carbon positive footprint with large scale social and farm forestry programme.
ITC has already pioneered research in clonal propagation that has enabled tribals and farmers to create plantations in over 1,00,000 hectares. This has also enabled the creation of 45 million person days of employment and has established a large green cover, helping mitigate the effects of climate change. ITC's social forestry project in Khammam has received CDM registration from the CDM-EB of the UNFCCC and is the first of its kind in India and second in the world to have received such a registration. The Paperboards division of ITC has also become the first company in India to become a member of the WWF-GFTN for responsible forestry and one of its units has already received FSC certification. Apart from this, ITC has also registered another 7 CDM projects that contribute to climate change mitigation efforts. ITC Sonar, the luxury hotel in Kolkata is the only hotel in the world to have earned carbon credits.
Benchmarking international best case scenarios, several of ITC's units have reported reduction in specific energy consumption, given that energy usage is a large contributor to climate change. Currently, over 30 % of the energy consumed in ITC's operations are from renewable sources.
Recently, at the 98th AGM of the Company, Chairman Mr Deveshwar had pointed out that the post-Copenhagen era would bring in new challenges to competitiveness of firms unless companies adopted low carbon strategies of growth. He had said that "The ability of a business corporation to adopt low-carbon operations as well as sustainable business practices will be one of the key determinants of competitiveness in the years to come. Going forward, competitiveness and profitability will be increasingly linked to the ability of business to make carbon reduction and the creation of sustainable livelihoods an integral part of their value proposition to consumers." ITC's strategy on climate change addresses these issues of competitiveness, thereby investing in the future security of its stakeholders.

The current state of sun-exposed forests is poor, and their preservation requires immediate and extensive measures, the most important of which is to maintain the brightness of esker forests by thinning the tree stand. A co-operation network consisting of experts in forestry and nature conservation in esker forests was formed during the project, entitled ‘State and Management of Sun-exposed Esker Forest Habitats'. The goal of the network will be to save the threatened special species of esker forests also in the future. In total, about 30,000 ha of esker forests, mainly in Natura 2000 areas, were inventoried during the project. The aim of this work was to find, on the basis of direction and topography, sun-exposed slopes where special plant species such as wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum) and mountain everlasting (Antennaria dioica) still grow and whose state could be improved through management operations. The total area of the esker slopes found suitable for management is about 120 ha. Only a few of these slopes were natural or semi-natural, and all were small in size, ranging from a few square metres to dozens of ares. Nearly all esker slopes found during the inventory work were full of vegetation. In the near future, these sites must be improved by means of management operations.‘UPM's own esker nature project started in 2003 and is still ongoing. In 2006-2008, the esker nature project was integrated into a very successful co-operation project. The project is an example of the new practice used in the METSO II programme and beyond in order to ensure biodiversity. The project operations can also be integrated into forestry-wood production,' says Timo Lehesvirta, Director, Sustainable Forestry, UPM.In its forests, UPM implements an international biodiversity programme whose aim is to ensure biodiversity as part of the sustainable use of forests and to promote best practices in forestry. The programme is based on six main areas of focus, which are all important for biodiversity. The subjects in question are native wood species, decayed wood, valuable habitats, forest structure, aquatic ecosystems, and pristine forests. In addition to the esker nature project, the habitat-specific projects implemented by UPM have included a fire environment project, a grove project, and a restoration project for small bodies of water.Esker forests are an important part of the Finnish cultural and natural landscape. Many special plants and insects live on these slopes. They withstand dryness well and need plenty of light and heat. These species have declined sharply in recent decades, because of, for example, the effective prevention of forest fires and the thickening and increase of vegetation caused by general eutrophication. The co-operation model implemented in the sun-exposed esker forest habitats project is being made a standard model also for practical nature conservation operations related to other forest habitats. Sun-exposed esker slopes and forests that are homes to important species are among the possible nature management targets included in the METSO 2008-2016 action programme. The Finnish Environmental Institute, Forestry Development Centre Tapio, 10 Forestry Centres, UPM, Metsähallitus's Forestry division and Natural Heritage unit, and the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences of the University of Helsinki have participated in the project. Many private forest-owners who felt it important to help the threatened esker species joined the project for practical work. The project results and the most important development needs in nature management of sun-exposed esker forests have been collected in the publication Sun-exposed Esker Forest Habitats - State and Management, which can be found on the Web site of Finland's environmental administration at www.ymparisto.fi/julkaisut.

Finch Paper launches Green Guide to its paper products

Finch Paper (NY) today announces availability of its new Green Guide, a comprehensive publication detailing its commitment to sustainability and offering a peek into everyday paper production processes, from the forest to finished paper. The geography of the industry is changing and the adjustment to the current competition environment is a fact for us."Pesonen highlighted two factors affecting the competitiveness of operational environment, crucial to the industry's success in Finland: dynamic wood markets and energy policy."The Finnish wood prices are the highest in Europe. I'm totally convinced that the dynamics of the Finnish wood markets can be improved essentially to serve both forest owners' and forest industries' interests. However, we need new measures and mechanisms from the authorities to promote the systematic use of forest resources and coordinate the work flow between forest centres and forest associations"."Finland's energy policy is essential for the competitiveness of the country. I cannot emphasise enough that the distribution reliability, sufficiency, and competitive price of electricity are vital for business and plans on expansion investments in Finland"."At the moment, the Finnish industry is paying the highest electricity taxes in Europe. The energy tax cutter proposed by the government will not bring any remedy until the year 2011. We do not ask subsidies from the society, but there is a need to quickly adjust the different taxes and other costs to the same level as in the competing countries"."What comes to energy supply, Finland is in its own league: the Finnish industry is and will be capable to build up its own electricity production capacity to secure the availability of electricity at a competitive price".Pesonen also commented the electricity feed tariffs and other subsidies distorting the competition."The versatile processing of biomass is very important for the future of the forest industry. The biomass value chain is offering many growth opportunities that can be destroyed with feed tariffs".Pesonen emphasised the forest industry's role in the world concerned about climate change. "Our industry's carbon footprint is small compared with that of many competing industries. We use renewable raw material and our products are recyclable. UPM is also a very significant producer of renewable energy. This foundation offers good strategic growth opportunities.""We see that the new bioforest industry is more focused and more profitable than our industry today. In the new forest industry the wood biomass is processed and refined on a significantly broader scale and the use of biomass is more versatile and more efficient than today. New, more demanding and further processed products will be developed to support the old ones: smart packaging, different composites, biofuels and biochemicals", Pesonen says.

Catalyst earns climate leadership recognition for third year

Catalyst Paper has been named a Climate Disclosure Leader in recognition of exceptional transparency relating to climate change. But it's also important to think about reducing what we use in the first place.
That's the strategy behind the environmentally focused, global communications campaign being launched today by Kimberly-Clark Professional. The campaign -- called Reduce Today, Respect Tomorrow -- takes a bigger-picture approach to environmental sustainability and is the first truly global communications campaign developed by Kimberly-Clark Professional.
One of four global business sectors within Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Kimberly-Clark Professional is one of the largest manufacturers of washroom products in the world, serving commercial and institutional facilities such as office buildings, hotels, schools, healthcare facilities, manufacturing plants, and other public buildings. Kimberly-Clark Professional is aligned with its parent company's commitment to sustainability at all levels of its business.
"Our ongoing efforts to achieve outstanding environmental performance are not just our responsibility as corporate citizens, they are vital to our success as a business," said Jan Spencer, President, Global Kimberly-Clark Professional. "These efforts are also guided by global, company-wide objectives for improving operational performance in energy, water, waste, and environmental management systems."
Reducing, Not Just Recycling
While many people have come to regard recycled fiber content as the main measure of environmental stewardship, Kimberly-Clark Professional takes a broader approach.
The central premise of the Reduce Today, Respect Tomorrow campaign is that focusing only on 100 percent recycled fiber content does not address the total picture, nor is it the best approach to environmental sustainability. Rather, Kimberly-Clark Professional looks at a bigger picture and strives to reduce environmental impact at every stage of a product's lifecycle. This approach to the environment is based on source reduction. Source reduction is essentially waste prevention, or designing products to eliminate waste at the start -- before it ever becomes waste. Products created with source-reduction in mind are designed in such a way that users actually consume less, either through improved performance, more reliable dispensing methods, or both. And if less is consumed in the first place, it often means there is less packaging waste, which further reduces the amount of waste to recycle, or send to landfill.
Yet, reduced consumption is only part of the solution. Kimberly-Clark Professional also considers ways to reduce environmental impact at every stage of a product's lifecycle, including:
-- Developing unique fiber-efficient technologies, such as the patented UCTAD manufacturing process, which reduces by up to 17 percent the amount of fiber needed to make tissue, towel and wiper products versus competitive wet press technology.
-- Compressing or redesigning products and packaging so that more fits into every case.
-- Introducing products such as Scott Coreless Standard Roll Bath Tissue, which reduces packaging waste by nearly 55 percent, compared with standard roll bath tissue -- including 100 percent core and paper wrap elimination.
-- Resizing cases to optimize how they fit onto standard pallets, so truck space can be used more effectively, reducing the total number of deliveries needed to fill orders.
Recycled Fiber. Reduced packaging. Manufacturing technologies that reduce the amount of raw material used. Superior product performance that allows customers to use less and waste less. These are all key components of Reduce Today, Respect Tomorrow and Kimberly-Clark Professional's business strategy for a more sustainable future.
Other Environmental Initiatives
As part of its overall environmental strategy, Kimberly-Clark recently became the first away-from-home tissue products provider in North America to receive Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification for a broad range of tissue and towel products. The certification applies to a variety of Kimberly-Clark Professional tissue products marketed under the Kleenex and Scott brand names for the away-from-home market.
In addition, Kimberly-Clark Professional has received Green Seal(TM) certification for a range of its Scott brand products, which are designed for customers who are interested in or mandated to use only 100 percent recycled fiber washroom products.
Kimberly-Clark Professional is also a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the nation's leading nonprofit coalition advancing buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. The company has partnered with USGBC primarily in support of the Council's efforts to advance the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Program for Existing Buildings.

For the first time mixed plastics including yoghurt pots and margarine tubs, plastic bags, shredded paper and waxed cartons used for milk and fruit juice will be collected.
This is as a result of two brand new contracts awarded to Bywaters and Greenstar Environmental Ltd by the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) in June which could save taxpayers up to £760,000 per year.
The contracts will run until 2014 to ensure a smooth transition of service for when new waste and recycling facilities are in place as part of the long-term waste services contract currently being procured.
Cllr Clyde Loakes, Chair of the North London Waste Authority, said: "In the current climate getting the best value solution for managing waste has to be a priority and we are delighted that through these contracts we have been able to achieve this.
"We look forward to working with Greenstar and Bywaters over coming years as we work towards achieving our targets for a more sustainable north London."
Through the new contracts there are also options for source-separated recyclables (materials separated at the kerbside) to be received which will offer north London councils greater flexibility for collecting recycling.
This is one of many measures being taken by the Authority to meet both national targets and those set out in the North London Joint Waste Strategy to double the current recycling rate from 27 per cent to 50 per cent and decrease waste sent to landfill by 2020.
Greenstar UK CEO Ian Wakelin, said: "With these contracts in place, we can proceed at full speed to fit out Greenstar's new Atlas ‘super MRF' at Edmonton. One of the biggest and most modern MRFs in the capital, Atlas could eventually process nearly 10 per cent of north London's recyclables.
"I'm delighted to see that Greenstar's ability to process big volumes of recyclables to quality standards has again been endorsed through this contract award."
John S Glover, Managing Director of Bywaters, said: "We are delighted to be awarded this contract and look forward to working with the NLWA to increase recycling rates in north London.
"With our strategically placed MRF in Bromley-by-Bow, Bywaters is able to sort north London's recyclables in line with the proximity principle. Our MRF has the ability to handle and recover the widest range of materials and consistently produces high quality outputs for reprocessing."
The expanded recycling collections will be rolled out across north London over the next six months.

The Kings of Sweden and Spain presented the award.
"We're proud of this award and see it as proof that we've fulfilled our ambition of combining efficient production with proactive and sustainable environmental consideration," says Arne Wallin, head of the Holmen Paper business area, who received the award from King Juan Carlos I.
This was the fourth time that the Drottning Kristinapriset was awarded by the Swedish-Spanish chamber of commerce in Madrid. Holmen won the award thanks to "its work on environmental and climate issues and promotion of relationships between Sweden and Spain."
Holmen's mill in Madrid produces newsprint and coated magazine paper based on 100 per cent recycled paper and therefore plays an important part in paper recycling in Spain. In total, 85 per cent of Madrid's recycled paper is used by Holmen Paper Madrid.
Furthermore, in 2010 all paper at the Madrid mill will be made using recycled water, making it a reference facility for the entire industry. At the mill, the plant that produces electricity and steam is currently being expanded and the new larger facility is scheduled to open in November 2009.
