NEWS OF PEOPLE

PAPER COMPANIES

CONSOLIDATED PAPERS INC.

Paul W. Clancy has been named v.p., Inter Lake Papers sales, and John F. Gillen dir., publication sales. Donald R. Smith has joined the quality systems department as a corporate process engineer; Scott R. McAllister has been promoted to project drafter in the corporate engineering department; Alan J. Kulich has transferred to the Biron Div. as process control support specialist; and Ray E. White has been appointed sr. process control engineer at the Niagara Div.

BLANDIN PAPER CO.

As a result of the acquisition of Blandin Paper Co. by UPM-Kymmene Corp., several management appointments have been made. Cary Young is v.p., marketing; Peter P. McDermott II is sr. v.p., finance and strategic development; John D. Ward Jr. is sr. v.p., technology and environment; Edward M. Zabinski becomes v.p., human resources; and Raime Maikki will be sr. v.p., operations.

BRIDGEWATER PAPER CO.

This wholly owned subsidiary of Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. has appointed Paul A. Planet chairman of operations and sales. The previous chairman, André Van Hattum, has returned to Abitibi-Consolidated's headquarters as exec. v.p. and pres. of Abitibi-Consolidated International.

AVENOR INC.

Pres. and CEO Paul E. Gagne resigned Nov. 7. Gagne was with the company for 21 years, including seven in the top post. While the board of directors searches for a new CEO, Arthur R. Sawchuck, a dir., will act as part-time interim CEO.

CANFOR CORP.

David L. Emerson, pres. and CEO of the Vancouver International Airport Authority, has been named pres. and CEO of Canfor Corp. effective Jan. 1. Canfor's chairman, Peter Bentley, has been acting CEO since the July resignation of Arild S. Nielssen. Emerson, 52, is a dir. of MacMillan Bloedel Ltd.

WEYERHAEUSER CO.

Weyerhaeuser Co. has named Steven Rogel pres. and CEO. He succeeds Jack Creighton, who is retiring. Rogel was previously CEO of Willamette Industries Inc. Willamette chairman, William Swindells, will serve as CEO indefinitely.

POTLACH CORP.

L. Pendleton Siegel has been named to the board of directors. He has served as the company's pres. and COO since 1994.

S.D. WARREN CO.

Harley Wood was recently named to the newly created post of v.p., technology and engineering. The new position is designed to better integrate technological innnovations with business objectives.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER

The Fine Papers Div. has named Margaret McDonald product mgr. for Beckett papers.

OXFORD SPECIALTY PAPERS

Ken Schroeder has been named a sr. sales representative.

GULF STATES PAPER CORP.

Nick D. Gibson has been promoted to business analyst for the company's Pulp and Paperboard Div., located at the headquarters in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

GEORGIA-PACIFIC CORP.

The company has announced several personnel appointments at both the Nekoosa and Port Edwards, Wis., mills. Chris Makynen has been appointed mgr., information resources at Port Edwards; Allan Michalski has been named sr. business analyst at Nekoosa; Jennifer Ramirez, process engineer at Nekoosa; Roger Schauer, paper mill maintenance supervisor at Port Edwards; and John West, superintendent for Nos. 1 and 2 paper machines at Nekoosa.

LAKE SUPERIOR PAPER INDUSTRIES

Kenneth J. Chartier has been promoted to professional services mgr.; Brian H. Marmorine has been named technical mgr., paper; Jeffrey R. Brungardt has been promoted to technical mgr., fiber; David W. Kask has advanced to information and process control mgr.

FRASER PAPERS

Stephen Dagenais recently joined the company as a sales representative.

ISLAND PAPER MILLS

Charles E. Dickens Jr. has been appointed production mgr.

CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL CORP.

The following changes have taken place in Pensacola, Fla. Trevor D. Buness has been named budgets and control supervisor for the Western Florida Region Forest Resources; Ian McKinnon has been promoted to reliability consulting mgr.; Adlai L. Platt has been named technical services group leader for this region; and Theresa Haag has joined the company as purchasing and safety coordinator for this region.

ENGELHARD CORP.

In a strategic reorganization of its Pigments and Additives Group, Curt Martin has been named gen. mgr. of the newly formed Pigments and Additives Enterprise, which is a more market-focused organization.

HARRIS WASTE MANAGEMENT GROUP INC.

Ed Simpson, P.E., has been appointed a research and development mgr.

INSITUFORM TECHNOLOGIES INC.

Alfred L. Woods, pres. of the Woods Group, has been appointed a dir. of the company for a term extending through the next annual meeting of stockholders. This brings the total number of directors to nine.

ALBANY INTERNATIONAL

Andrew J. Dolan has been promoted to v.p., marketing for U.S. Press Fabrics.

VOITH SULZER PAPER TECHNOLOGY

Harry J. Hackl has been appointed to the company's Board of Management. He will head the new marketing division.

MOORE PRODUCTS CO.

Donald E. Bogle has been named pres. and CEO, replacing William B. Moore. Moore will become vice chairman of the board of directors and chief technology officer. Edward T. Hurd will continue as chairman of the board of directors and chairman of the executive committee. Edward J. Curry, exec. v.p. and COO, will report to Bogle.

NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CO.

Michael Linscott has been named dir., sales and marketing, Paper Chemicals, Industrial Starch Div.

LORENTZEN & WETTRE

Bruce Kopkin has been appointed pres. of Lorentzen & Wettre USA, based in Atlanta, Ga.

GOLDER ASSOCIATES INC.

Roland A. Ericsson has been named mgr. of business development.

HONEYWELL INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION & CONTROL

David W. Miller has been named v.p. of the Measurement & Control Business Unit. Miller was formerly pres. of Midcom Inc.

OSMONICS INC.

William Eykamp has been named to the company's board of directors. Eykamp is a management consultant and an adjunct professor of engineering at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. Mike Bolton has been named gen. mgr. of the company's strategic business unit in Rockford, Ill.

RAISIO CHEMICALS AMERICAS

J. Mark Willson has been appointed to the newly created position of business development mgr., Pulping Additives. He will be based in Vancouver, B.C.

NATIONAL SEAL COMPANY

Bob LaBoube has been named v.p. of the Piping and Gas Collection Systems Div. He was formerly the dir. of technical services.

PRECISION COATINGS INC.

Donald V. Lackey Jr. has been promoted to v.p., operations.

KEMIRA PIGMENTS INC.

Norman L. Christensen has been named pres. of Kemira Pigments. Risto Ojala, who had been pres. of this Savannah, Ga., division, has relocated to Helsinki, Finland, to assume the role of v.p. research and development, Technology of Kemira Pigments Oy.

HORTON INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS

Louis DeClercq has been appointed gen. mgr. of Horton International NV SA, Wemmel, Belgium.

MOYNO INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS

Dr. Alan Boyce has been named to the position of v.p. and gen. mgr.

FLOWSERVE CORP.

Flowserve Corp., formed by the merger of BW/IP Inc. and Durco International, announced that Renée J. Hornbaker will become its v.p. and CFO, effective Dec. 1. She succeeds Bruce E. Hines, who will be leaving the company after more than 26 years of service.

AMERICAN PAD & PAPER CO.

American Pad & Paper Co. CFO Kevin McAleer has resigned to pursue other interests.

GILBRALTAR PACKAGING GROUP INC.

Deke Abbott, who retired in June of this year, has agreed to rejoin the company as exec. v.p. and COO, effective immediately. He will be responsible for all of the company's operating divisions and will spearhead an effort to improve operating profitability.

CONVERTING SPECIALTIES INC.

Richard A. Holmes, formerly sales and marketing representative, has been promoted to v.p., sales and marketing. Misty A. Roberts, formerly plant mgr., has been promoted to v.p., operations for the company.

JUDD PAPER CO.

Steve Stanford has been named exec. v.p.; R. Paul Moody, products mgr. for converter roll packaging and processing; Don Blair, products mgr. for optical and precious metals packaging; and Mike Clark, production mgr.

GREAT LAKES PACKAGING CORP.

Cynthia Becker has joined the company as marketing mgr.

GRAPHIC PACKAGING CORP.

Jack L. Mackert has been appointed dir. of operations for the company's Specialty Carton Div. plants.

The company has also reorganized its Folding Carton Div., which has been separated into the Specialty Carton Div. and the General Folding Carton Div. David A. Tolley has been appointed pres. of the new Specialty Carton Div. in Colorado and Jack Waring has been appointed pres. of the new General Folding Carton Div. in Virginia.

 

ASSOCIATIONS

CANADIAN PULP & PAPER ASSN. (CPPA)

CPPA secy. and v.p., issues management Elinor Blanchard announced that she will retire, effective Feb. 1. She has been with the association for 32 years.

 

OBITUARIES

GEORGIA-PACIFIC CORP.

Georgia-Pacific Corp. employee Rod Milburn, 47, was found dead Nov. 11 at the company's Baton Rouge, La., paper plant. Milburn was a U.S. gold medalist in the 110-m hurdles in the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany, setting a world record.

NALCO CHEMICAL CO.

William James, retired national sales mgr., recently passed away. He was a member of PIMA, the American Chemical Society, and TAPPI. He joined Nalco in 1959 as a research chemist.
