U.S. PAPER AND BOARD PRODUCTION
Seasonally unadjusted paper and paperboard production in the U.S. rose a slight 1% in January, from the same month the previous year, to 8.06 million tons. Paper production alone was 3.78 million tons, up a slight 0.2% from January 1997 and up 7,000 tons from December. Paperboard production increased 1.8% in January from the previous year and stood at 4.3 million tons.
Among the major paper grades, uncoated groundwood shipments were down 4% in January and uncoated free-sheet was down 4.1%. Unbleached kraft paper and bleached kraft paper were down 12.1% and 14.2%, respectively. Coated paper shipments were up more than 8% in January 1998 over January 1997.
In paperboard, unbleached kraft linerboard production (including exports) was up 5.5%. Set-up boxboard for domestic use was down 9.9%. Market pulp shipments in January totaled 630,000 tons, down 7.6% from January last year. Consumption of recovered paper at U.S. mills grew 2.2%.
