Consolidated Paper’s Inter Lake Papers mill in Kimberly, Wis., has ordered two gas infrared coating drying systems from Marsden. The systems will be installed on the mill’s No. 95 off machine coater. The systems were purchased by Voith Sulzer Paper Technology as part of the coater rebuild.

For its mill in Tomahawk, Wis., Tenneco Packaging Corp. has ordered the Model 44 fully-automatic linear-brush shower from James Ross Ltd. for its new high-pressure wire cleaning shower.

Crown Vantage Inc., Milford, N.J., has purchased a CP-10 screw press from Vincent. The Milford mill produces food grade wrapping paper from market pulp, and the installation of the screw press will reduce the amount of clarifier underflow sludge sent to landfill.

Potlatch Corp.’s integrated pulp and paper mill in Cloquet, Minn., has contracted with PMCI for predictive maintenance services. In addition to these services, PMCI will supply Potlatch-Cloquet with a thorough machinery audit of new equipment installed in the mill’s $550 million addition, which features a pulping machine.

Strathcona Paper Co. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing for the paper machine at its Napanee, Ont., mill.

Fort James Corp. has begun implementation of ABB’s PPS/Schedule and PPS/Trim for improved planning at its folding box board mill in Kalamazoo, Mich. The new system will provide improvements in mill efficiency by automating and optimizing machine scheduling and trim planning, as well as making schedules and order status available electronically to employees throughout the mill. The system will manage production on the mill’s two paper machines, two winders, and rewinder.

National Gypsum Co. of Pryor, Okla., has purchased a Deltapurge dissolved air flotation clarifier from Meri Papertec, a joint venture partner of Voith Sulzer in the area of water, sludge, and reject handling. The Deltapurge will help to improve the white water clarity of the No 1. paper machine.

Grays Harbor Paper has ordered dryer heads from Lawton for the No. 1 paper machine at its Hoquiam, Wash., mill. Lawton will design, cast, machine, and ASME code the 48-in.-dia. heads for 50 psi operating pressure.

Climax Manufacturing Co.’s Paperboard Div. of Carthage, N.Y., has achieved ISO 9001:1994 certification. The recycled fiber paper mill produces a variety of specialty paperboard grades.

MacMillan Bloedel, a manufacturer of lumber and corrugated paperboard, is using Cognos’ business intelligence solutions to improve customer service, track product shipments, and identify trends in the industry. Using these business intelligence solutions, MacMillan Bloedel set up a company-wide intranet for employees and managers.

U.S. Paper Mills has ordered dryer heads from the Lawton Co. for the No. 1 paper machine at its Menosha, Wis., mill. Lawton will design, cast, machine, and ASME code the 42-in.-dia. heads for 75 psi operating pressure.

Rock Tenn Co. has commissioned another Marsden gas infrared drying system for its Missisquoi mill location in Sheldon Springs, Vt.

Lake Superior Paper Industries will increase its ability to supply large rolls of supercalendered paper to customers through a new automated handling system authorized in the 2000 capital improvement program of its parent company, Consolidated Papers Inc.

Appleton Papers Inc., Combined Locks, Wis., has ordered a rebuild of its No. 6 paper machine from Voith Sulzer Paper Technology North America. The rebuild work is comprised of the installation of a new DuoFormer D.

Menasha Corp., Ostego, Mich., has ordered a Centrifilter for its paperboard mill from Voith Sulzer Paper Technology.

Bay State Paper Co. in Hyde Park, Mass., has purchased 36-in.-dia. paper machine dryers from VanTek Inc.

Champion International Corp. has awarded Sandwell Engineering Inc. a contract to proceed with engineering for a new long log woodyard at the Courtland, Ala., mill. The project includes installation of one of the highest capacity long log debarking/chipping operations in North America. Startup of the new woodyard is scheduled for October 2000.

Abitibi-Consolidated Inc., Fort Frances, Ont., has installed a new Gardner Systems steam system with Blow-Thru controls on the No. 7 paper machine main section. As a result, the machine has achieved higher production and recorded steam savings are 12,000 pph to 13,000 pph.

Weyerhaeuser Paper of New Bern, N.C., has replaced a worn belt press with a Vincent Model VP-16 screw press. Final press cake solids were improved from the 30%’s to 45%, and the cake is now sold as a fuel to a cogen power plant. No polymer is used in the clarifier, although a pair of sidehill screens are mounted above the press inlet.

Crown Vantage has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the design and manufacture of new taper cone pulleys to replace the original pulleys on the No. 1 paper machine at its Port Huron, Mich., mill.

Interlake Papers has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing for the No. 2 paper machine at its mill in St. Catharines, Ont.

Georgia-Pacific’s Warwick, N.Y., mill installed Advanced Vision Technology Ltd.’s PrintVision/9000 NT. The PrintVision/9000 NT is a vision-based automatic print defect detection system.

Smurfit-Stone has ordered a turpentine decanter and storage tank for its mill in Fernandina Beach, Fla. The new equipment is scheduled for installation at the mill in January 2000.
