Minas Basin Pulp, Hantsport, N.S., has installed a Vincent Model CP-12 screw press to dewater OCC tertiary/quaternary rejects and waste sludge prior to hauling to landfill. Press cake is in the range of 50% solids, and now alternatives such as burning are being considered. Pre-thickening is done with a sidehill screen.

Daishowa, Port Angeles, Wash., has installed a mist eliminator system from AES Engineered Systems.

Eastern Paper has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing for the paper machines at its Brewer, Maine, mill.

At its East Millinocket, Maine, mill, Bowater has installed and started up a Thermo-Jet shower for dryer fabric cleaning on the No. 6 paper machine.

Graphic Packaging has ordered a TriDisc conversion kit and refiner plates from the Lawton Co. for a Beloit DD 30-in. refiner at its Kalamazoo, Mich., mill. The kit converts the refiner from using four sets of segmented plates to using three full circle plates, including two stator plates and a two-sided single-piece rotor plate. The advantages are longer plate life, increased refining area, reduced energy consumption, and faster plate changes.

Mead Corp. has awarded a corporate contract to Thermo Web Systems to supply doctor blades to select mills.

Hollingsworth & Vose has received seven complete dryer doctor assemblies from Sinclair International for installation at its West Groton, Mass., facility. Several of the assemblies were supplied with oscillation capability, and the remainder were designed to provide oscillation upgrades at a later date if required.

U.S. Paper Mills has ordered six dryer heads from the Lawton Co. for the No. 1 paper machine at its DePere, Wis., mill. Lawton will design, cast, machine, and ASME code the 42-in.-dia. heads for 100 psi operating pressure.

Forest Products Cooperative Group of Mills has awarded Thermo Web Systems a corporate contract to supply doctor blades at its mills.

International Paper Co. has awarded Thermo Web Systems a corporate contract to supply doctor blades at its mills.

UPM-Kymmene has successfully started up a Valmet WinRoll winder at its mill in Jämsänkoski, Finland. Three days after start-up, the winder set a world record by winding sets of high-quality rolls at a speed of 9,840 fpm. The fully automated WinRoll has a trim width of 335 in. and is capable of winding the entire production from the No. 5 paper machine that produces 250,000 tpy of SC rotogravure papers. Since startup, the WinRoll speeds have averaged 7,545 fpm to 8,200 fpm.

 

Pulp & Paper Safety Association Honors Achievements
Companies with outstanding achievements in safety for 1999 were honored during the Pulp & Paper Safety Assn.’s Professional Development Conference, held May 21 through May 24, 2000, in San Antonio, Texas. Keynote speaker for the awards banquet, and winner of the Safety Assn.’s Eagle Award, was Serge Sorokin, vice president and operations manager for Champion International in Sartell, Minn.

The following is a list of pulp and paper mill award recipients within each of the four award categories. Woodland, converting, bag converting, corrugated converting, folding carton, sheeting, wood product, sawmill, plywood mill, and specialty product operations were also honored within these categories.
