  U.S. paper and paperboard production rose in October from September by almost 3% to slightly more than 8 million tons. For the year-to-date through October, production stood at 79.5 million tons, a slight 0.3% increase over October 1997. At the current rate, production was on track to reach 95.4 million tons this year.

Paper production increased in October from the previous month by 1.8% to 3.86 million tons. For the 10 months, it was up 0.4%. Paperboard production was 4.17 million tons, up 3.75% from September and up 0.2% for the year. Market pulp shipments totaled 682,000 tons in October, up 8,000 tons from September; for the year-to-date they stood at 6.7 million tons, down 9.2%.

Canadian newsprint shipments were down slightly in October from the previous year to 696,000 metric tons from 772,000 metric tons. Total paper and paperboard production was 1.55 million metric tons, down 4% from October a year ago and down 2% for the 10 months.
