Interstate Paper, Riceboro, Ga., has ordered a new d.c. drive system and motors from GE Industrial Systems. The DC2000 adjustable-speed, digital drive system will be installed to control a new Jagenberg winder and Pope reel as part of an equipment upgrade at the unbleached linerboard mill.

For its No. 1 and No. 2 paper machines in Menasha, Wis., U.S. Paper Mills has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing.

Rock-Tenn Co., Battle Creek, Mich., has ordered a 138-in. paper machine reel and reel spool storage system from A&F Corp. The reel will process 90-in.-dia. reels. In addition, the mill has started up six Accu-Jet showers from AES Engineered Systems that are running on all top formers. In addition to cleaning fabric, the Accu-Jet also eliminates misting.

Gulf States Paper, Demopolis, Ala., has ordered a Spirac Spiropress screen press Model SP-LC from Rockwood International System Supply Inc. The equipment will receive screen and dewater rejects and knots from the new hardwood and pine four-stage screening system.

Fletcher Challenge Forests, Inter-national Paper, Monsanto Co., and Westvaco Corp. have announced their intention to form a forestry biotech-nology joint venture. The four companies will contribute $60 million over five years to the joint venture, which will produce and market tree seedlings aimed at improving worldwide forest health and productivity.

Fraser Papers, West Carrollton, Ohio, has received ISO 14001 registration attesting to the use of a certified environ-mental management system. Fraser is among the first American paper com-panies to receive ISO 14001 certification.

Rock-Tenn Co., Aurora, Ill., has purchased Thermo Black Clawson’s Ultra-V vertical pressure screen and UltraSorter reject processor. The new equipment will replace outdated coarse screens, improving debris removal and reducing energy consumption.

For Inter Lake Papers Inc. in Kimberly, Wis., Consolidated Papers Inc. has ordered three Smart Advisor sheet break managers from ABB. The systems will be installed on off-machine coater OMC97 and two paper machines—PM95 and PM96. In addition, Lamb-Grays Harbor Co. will design, build, and install a high-production, fully automatic roll wrapping system for the mill. Installation is planned for late 1999.

For the No. 6 paper machine at its Middletown, Ohio, mill, Smurfit Stone Container has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing.

Bowater Inc., Southern Div., has ordered a new Thermo Black Clawson Ultra-V pressure screen and Liquid Cyclone high-density centrifugal cleaner for its kraft pulp mill in Calhoun, Tenn. Fitted with small slots, the new screen will be installed in the secondary position. The existing Ultra III pressure screen will be relocated to the primary position with a new TBC cylinder and rotor combination.

Gilbert Paper Co., Menasha, Wis., has started up an automatic stretch-film roll wrapping system from Pesmel Oy through Pulp & Paper Technology Inc. The delivery includes an Autowrap radial and axial roll wrapping system and features two infeed stations—one to accept rolls directly from a winder at floor level and one to accept rolls from remote locations.

Madison Paper Industries’ variant configurator implementation at its Madison, Maine, mill has become part of the permanent research collection on information technology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. At Madison, an SAP ERP system allows each line item of a sales order to be configured individually, dispenses with pre-assigned part numbers, and allows built-to-order customer response.

Canadian Forest Products Ltd., Prince George, B.C., has ordered an HC refining system from Sunds Defibrator for its sack paper production. The order includes a TwinRoll press, an RGP 262 refiner connected to a 14,000 hp motor, and a FlowJet agitator, as well as process control, installation, supervision, and commissioning.

Roosevelt Paper Co., Chicago, Ill., has ordered a rebuild of its Jagenberg winder from A&F Corp. The rebuild will upgrade the winder from 4,000 fpm to 6,000 fpm.

Cincinnati Paperboard Corp., Cincinnati, Ohio, has ordered a new RDE 2476 paper machine winder and unwind from A&F Corp. The winder face is 128 in. and rewind diameter is 76 in. The heavy-duty reel spool unwind will handle 90-in. rolls.

Industria de Papel Arapoti S.A., a company owned by Champion International, has purchased two JetFlow F Free-Jet applicators from Voith Sulzer for its mill in Arapoti-Parana, Brazil. With a working width of 216 in., the new applicators are designed for a maximum speed of 5,280 ft/min. The new equipment is intended to increase production capacity of LWC paper by 10%.

CMPC has started up a Sunds Defibrator OxyTrac system at its Santa Fe mill in Nacimiento, Chile. This is the first ever two-stage oxygen delignification system installed for processing of eucalyptus globolus/nitens in Chile.
