PAPER COMPANIES

GEORGIA-PACIFIC CORP.
Charles M. McElrea, v.p.–process improvement–distribution division, has been named v.p.–finance, business planning and logistics–containerboard and packaging. He will oversee financial functions for both business groups, as well as the business planning group.

MEAD
Glenn Poulin has been appointed general supt. of North Coated, with re-sponsibility for all paper manufacturing on Nos. 10, 11 and 12 paper machines, along with the North End Finishing Room.

 



Jerry LeClaire has been appointed Paper Manufacturing and Pulping Oper-ations gen. mgr., with responsibility for all aspects of paper and pulp manufacturing at the Runford mill.

PLAINWELL PAPER
Brent Hawkins has been named v.p., resident mgr. of the Shasta Paper Co. mill in Anderson, Calif.; Lori Kissinger has been promoted to mgr. of Manufacturing Services at the Plainwell Paper Co. mill in Plainwell, Mich.; Rob Bradsher has been promoted to the position of mill mgr. at the Plainwell Paper Co. located in Plainwell, Mich.;




Francis J. Fitzpatrick has been promoted to pres., Specialty Paper Div.; and Bill Boyden has been promoted to sr. v.p. of operations.

CONSOLIDATED PAPERS
George C. Monville, mill systems development mgr.–information systems, is serving as the 1999 chairman of Paper Industry Management Assn.–Information Systems.

In the Information Systems Div., Debra Stucker has been promoted to project systems analyst, Daniel Blumenstein has joined as technology analyst, and Timothy Shanahan has joined as technology support analyst. In the Kraft Div., Ronald Herman has been promoted to maintenance & engineering mgr., Richard Kryshak has been promoted to mechanical supervisor, and Scott McAllister has been promoted to maintenance supervisor– power & recovery. In the Research & Develop-ment Div., Dean Benjamin has been promoted to engineering & coater research mgr., and James Brockman has been promoted to certification technician. At the Niagara Div., Thomas Witt has been promoted to finishing shift supervisor.

SMURFIT-STONE
Del Brooks has been named gen. mgr. at the company’s Jacksonville, Fla., containerboard mill, replacing John West, who retired recently after contributing almost 40 years to the paper industry. Roger Hagan has been named gen. mgr. of the company’s Coshocton, Ohio, containerboard mill, replacing Bob Lynch, who has taken over the gen. mgr.’s responsibilities at the company’s Florence, S.C., mill. Lynch replaces Cecil Hamilton, who retired after 48 years of service to the company.

WESTVACO CORP.
Mark X. Diverio has joined the company in the newly created position of v.p., strategic planning. He joins Westvaco with an extensive knowledge of the paper and forest products industry developed during a distinguished career as a sell-side analyst covering the industry for leading brokerage firms.

MOHAWK PAPER MILLS INC.
James Bird has been named mgr., Cut Size Programs, and Chris Harrold has been promoted to mgr., Mohawk Digital Papers.

ALLIANCE FOREST PRODUCTS INC.
Robert S. Forbes has been appointed special advisor to the pres. and CEO; Dino Fuoco has been promoted to exec. v.p. and CFO; Georges Cabana has been promoted to sr. v.p., Human Resources and Public Affairs; Pierre Monet has been promoted to v.p., Finance; Gerry Renaud has been promoted to v.p., Operations, Pulp and Paper; and Kevin B. Peter A. Sails has been appointed to the position of v.p., manufacturing, Starch Div., with responsibility for global starch manufacturing, engineering and the agribusiness aspects of National’s starch business.

REGAL-BELOIT CORP.
Scott L. Schneier has been promoted to a group v.p. and will move to the corp-orate office. He will be responsible for all operations pertaining to sales, marketing, and manufacturing for the Mechanical Group’s Durst, Foote-Jones/Illinois Gear, Velvet Drive Transmissions, Mastergear Worldwide, and Cutting Tools divisions.

DIECK MUELLER GROUP
The board of directors has promoted Michael S. Mueller from exec. v.p. to pres./COO. Mueller will take on additional business management responsibilities within the firm, while continuing to fulfill client staffing needs.

JM CLIPPER
The company has assigned new roles to three company executives in a reorganization of responsibilities designed to more effectively support the company’s expanding position in a number of markets. Steve Suggs, promoted to v.p., Marketing and Technology, is responsible for product engineering, research and development, customer service, and marketing for radial seals, industrial products, and leader metal gaskets. Jeff Kruwell, dir., National Accounts/Alliance Programs (a new position), will implement special programs to strengthen relationships with existing and new strategic customers. Doug Wade, new gen. marketing mgr., Radial Products, has expanded responsibilities for marketing Clipper Oil Seals and labyrinth seals.




STOWE WOODWARD/MOUNT HOPE
Bertram Staudenmaier has been appointed pres., after 11 years with Stowe Woodward.




NEILL & GUNTER INC.
Bruce A. Ward, P.E., a civil/structural engr. with over 24 years experience, has joined as mgr. of civil and structural engineering, and Richard F. Shea has joined the company’s electrical dept. as an electrical design engr.

INTERNATIONAL SPECIALTY PRODUCTS
Kumar Shah has been appointed to the position of sr. v.p. of corporate development, an executive officer position. He will be responsible for mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and related activities as well as corporate strategy. He will replace Carl Eckardt, who will retire by the end of the year.

RHEOX INC.
Richard M. Jobbins, Ph.D, has joined the company’s technology team. He was most recently employed with Rhodia/Rhône-Poulenc in Cranbury, NJ, where he was principle scientist/group leader in the development of specialty polymers.




REICHHOLD
Michael B. Owen has been named v.p. and leader of Reichhold’s Packaging Systems business team.

SERVOMEX
Mel Platte has been promoted to pres., having served as v.p. and gen. mgr. since 1996.





Kevin Geary has been appointed to the position of product mgr., and will have responsibility for all operations of the newly formed Servomex Tranducers Ltd. in the Americas.

GENCORP
Michael E. Hicks has been named to the position of sr. v.p. and CFO, and D. Michael Steuert, sr. v.p. and CFO of Litton Industries, has been named to the board of directors.

SANDWELL INC.
The company has added Ronnie C. Knight, PMP, to its staff as v.p., pulp and paper. This addition supports the U.S. Divisions strategy of continued leadership in providing engineering services to the pulp and paper industry throughout the U.S.

Larry Lane, Jr. has been named sales/ service engr.

BUCKMAN LABORATORIES
Papermaking Technologies of Buckman Laboratories has announced that Patrick W. McCarthy has accepted the position of regional business mgr. for New England.

INGERSOLL-DRESSER PUMP CO.
John Horvath, marketing service supervisor, was recently recognized as the Hydraulic Institute Member of the Year for his contributions as chairman of the Hydraulic Institute Statistics Committee, having shown remarkable leadership in upgrading and reforming the Hydraulic Institute’s statistics program.

 

RETIREMENTS

INTERNATIONAL PAPER
After more than 30 years of service, Ray Naton, national sales mgr. for Strathmore Papers, announces his retirement, effective July 1, 1999. He was the first-ever national sales mgr. for Strathmore and has greatly contributed to the market leadership of Strathmore’s premium text, cover, and writing papers since1986.

SOUTHEAST PAPER MANUFACTURING CO.
Omega W. Rodgers, Jr. is retiring after 11 total years with Southeast Paper. He was part of the original management team selected by the owners in 1977 to design, start-up, and operate the first machine which began production in 1979.

 

OBITUARIES

JOE PIPER INC.
Industry leader Joe Piper died at his home in Birmingham, Ala. on Monday, March 8th. He began his career in the paper industry in 1951 as a manufacturer’s representative. In 1966 he founded Joe Piper Inc., one of the first stocking distributors in the U.S. of odd lot paperboard, to serve the folding carton and converting industry.

RHEOX INC.
Dave Bryant, mgr. of the Technical Dept., Waterborne Coatings for Rheon Inc., died suddenly on March 10, 1999. His career in the coatings industry spanned more than 20 years, and he held a variety of technical positions.
