Fluoropolymer coatings

A brochure from Ausimont describes its anticorrosion fluoropolymer coatings for protecting scrubbers, chemical tanks, pulp and bleaching tanks, hoods, and exhaust ducts. Chemical resistance, permeation resistance, and thermal and mechanical properties are given on Halar ECTFE, Hyflon MFA and PFA, and Hylar PVDF. Ausimont USA Inc.

Technology platform

Rockwell Automation Drive Systems introduces ControlLogix systems, enabling pulp and paper mills to implement advanced communication and motor control technologies into current drive systems. Each system combines high-speed processing with a multiprocessor, multi-tasking, priority-structured architecture. A feature called RIUP allows removal or insertion of any module under power without disrupting other modules. Rockwell Automation Drive Systems

Debarker

Morbark has introduced the heavy-duty Rosserhead debarker. The hydraulically controlled down pressure on the debarking head can handle live decks, waste conveyors, log troughs, and metal detectors as well. Also, its motor-to-head arrangement simplifies belt changing and keeps debris out of the belts. Other features include a deluxe operator’s cab and tapered depth shoes. Morbark

Online formation and floc analyzer

CyberMetrics has introduced the 2D F-Sensor, a tool for paper machine optimization and floc visualization. The sensor uses a high-speed video camera and strobe to capture a “look through” image of the web and reacts instantly to changes in wet end paper machine conditions. Proprietary image processing software tracks a global formation index as well as average floc size and orientation. CyberMetrics

Lime slaking systems

The Omega Line from Penn Process Technologies is made up of low-maintenance, microprocessor-controlled lime slaking systems. The Model 412 detention slaker and the Model 700 paste slaker promote slaking efficiency and reduce chemical usage. Slakers are available in capacities of 500 lb/hr to 10,000 lb/hr and are controllable over a maximum 20:1 range. Penn Process Technologies Inc.

Fiber orientation sensor

ABB has introduced the industry's first online fiber orientation sensor for measuring both sides of the sheet. The Smart Fiber orientation sensor provides four profiles: top and bottom angle, and top and bottom ratio. The sensor uses ABB’s laser arc polarization measurement principle, allowing high sensitivity to fibers without the negative influences from fillers, gloss, and other surface variables. ABB

Online strength sensor

Lorentzen & Wettre’s online strength sensor measures tensile stiffness index (TSI) at full production speed. The TSI can be presented in both machine direction and cross direction and is continuously displayed on a computer screen. The sensor, which has no moving parts, is located before the reel and monitors furnish, refining, and rush/drag ratio. If any parameters change, the paper strength increases or decreases across the entire CD-profile. Lorentzen & Wettre

Slitting systems

Dienes designs, configures, and installs slitting systems for the paper manufacturing industry. At Dienes, a fully equipped application testing laboratory provides analysis of customer materials and recommends the appropriate slitting tools and setup adjustments. In addition, an extensive range of knife-sharpening services is available to customers.

Calibration software

Fisher-Rosemount has enhanced its Asset Management Solutions (AMS) software to include a Calibration Manager Snap-On application. The module streamlines calibration activities, interfaces AMS systems with self-documenting calibrators, and provides access to calibration, configuration, and status information in a single database. Fisher-Rosemount

Sand filter

The Volcano by Lighthouse Separation Systems is a continuous sand filter with high removal efficiencies. It constantly backwashes a portion of the sand bed, thereby regenerating the sand bed without interrupting operation. Because there are no moving parts, the filter requires a minimum of maintenance and operator attention. Pneumatic hookup is required. Lighthouse Separation Systems Inc.

Dryer optimization system

Johnson’s TechDry System is an interactive system of services that optimizes drying processes. It allows papermakers to increase machine efficiency, eliminate dryer flooding, and improve energy efficiency. The system consists of four key components: joints and syphons, the steam system, a monitoring system, and advanced controls. Johnson

Operating and maintenance software

Mobil has released Mobil Monitor Maintenance Professional 1.5, a software program that monitors and pinpoints potential operating and maintenance problems in manufacturing equipment. It is fully lab-integrated, Internet-capable, Windows-based, and Y2K ready. It features technology that is designed for electronic data transfer, display, trending, graphing, and management of oil analysis and other routine condition-monitoring data. Mobil Corp.

Clarified water screening system

Krofta Waters has introduced a built-in clarified water screening system for its range of Supracell dissolved air flotation clarifiers. The system will automatically screen a proportion of clarified water from the Supracell, meaning that pulp and paper mills can recycle additional water into areas having critical levels for suspended solids—such as machine sprays or showers. Krofta Engineering Inc.

Butterfly valves

Jamesbury has produced a brochure describing its Wafer-Sphere butterfly valves, comparing them to conventional gate valves. The valves provide a cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications where bubble-tight shut-off is required in manual, automated, and proportional services with temperatures from -320°F to 500°F and pressures to 1,480 psi. Jamesbury

Pulper

The Tornado Pulper by Bolton Emerson Americas pre-treats raw stocks such as cotton, hemp, flax, leather, and synthetic fibers. It also recovers waste from products considered impossible to defiber. The rotor—the only moving part—moves within the stator, creating a scissors-like action that slices material. The pulper can operate in either batch or continuous mode. Bolton Emerson Americas

Dewatering technology

Ashbrook Corp. has made available a full-color brochure describing Ashbrook Winklepress dewatering technology. This brochure includes graphic portrayals of each of the specialized Winklepress dewatering zones. In combination, these zones make optimum, cost-effective dewatering possible. Ashbrook Corp.
