Consolidated Paper’s Inter Lake Papers mill in Kimberly, Wis., has ordered three Smart Advisor Sheet Break Managers from ABB. The systems will be installed on the No. 97 off-machine coater and the No. 95 and No. 96 paper machines. The Inter Lake Papers mill has the capacity to produce 1,253 tpd of medium-weight groundwood coated printing papers and lightweight groundwood-free coated printing papers.

For the No. 1 paper machine at its Montreal, Que., mill, Kruger Inc. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing.

Willamette Industries, Port Hueneme, Calif., has placed an order with Voith Sulzer to replace the pulping system at its OCC plant with new machinery. The new TwinPulp III pulping and detrashing system includes a Unipulper, a junk tower with a grapple, a Contaminex CM, a Contaminex CMV, and a screen drum.

For its mill in Big Island, Va., Georgia-Pacific has ordered a two-effect pre-evaporator system from U.S. Filter. The system will play a major role in the mill’s Cluster Rule compliance program. The pre-evaporation system will capture blow steam from the mill’s pulping process and condense it in the first effect of the two-effect system. Part of the second effect will be directed to an existing multiple effect evaporator train to maximize efficient use of the waste stream. For the No. 1 paper machine at its Wickliffe, Ky., mill, Westvaco has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing.

Tembec Inc., Temiscaming, Que., has placed an order with Thermo Black Clawson for upgrading the washing processes in its 600 a.d. mtpd sulfite pulping line. Tembec ordered a 6m-x-20m Type “D” Chemi-Washer with seven washing stages for removing spent liquor from the brownstock following the knotting and screening steps. Each stage of shower liquor is captured and recycled so that the pulp washing occurs in a counter-current fashion.

Smurfit Stone Container has ordered dryer heads from the Lawton Co. for the No. 1 paper machine at its Carthage, Ind., mill. Lawton will cast, design, and ASME code the 36-in.-dia. heads for 75 psi operating pressure.

Abitibi-Consolidated, Snowflake, Ariz., has ordered a Rejectsorter for its OCC plant from Voith Sulzer. The Rejectsorter will be installed as a tailing coarse screen for fiber deflaking and thickening of rejects in the mill’s production of corrugated medium.

Appleton Papers’ West Carrollton, Ohio, mill has become one of the country’s first paper mills to earn ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system.

Domtar Eddy Specialty Papers, Ottawa, Ont., has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new spare nylon rings for gearing on its No. 11 paper machine.

Bennington Paperboard, North Hoosick, N.Y., has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing for its No. 1 paper machine.

Ind. Papelera del Caribe has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing on its paper machine at the company’s Panama City, Panama mill.

 

Pulp & Paper Safety Association Honors Achievements

Companies with outstanding achievements in safety for 1998 were honored during the Pulp and Paper Safety Assn.’s Professional Development Conference, held May 30 through June 2, 1999, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Keynote speaker for the awards banquet was Georgia-Pacific chairman of the board, CEO, and president Pete Correll.
The following is a list of pulp and paper mill award recipients within each of the four award categories. Woodland, converting, bag converting, corrugated converting, folding carton, sheeting, wood product, sawmill, plywood mill, and specialty product operations were also honored within these categories.
