BOISE CASCADE

John C. Bender has been elected senior vice president, Building Products. He assumes responsibility for the company’s Building Materials Distribution and Timber and Wood Products Division upon the retirement of Richard B. Parrish at the end of July.

 

CHAMPION

Pamela Miller has been named director, creative services for the Champion Web line of coated papers and Meghan McNally has been named specification sales representative for Champion Web line of coated papers.

 

CHESAPEAKE

James E. Rogers was elected to Chesapeake Corporation’s board of directors. Rogers has over 25 years of experience in the paper and packaging industry, and is currently the president of SCI Investors Inc., a private equity firm based in Richmond, Va.

 

CONSOLIDATED PAPER

Diane Schmidt-Gobin of Lake Superior Paper Industries, Duluth, Minn., has been promoted to environmental supervisor. Lake Superior is a company of Consolidated Papers Inc., Appointments at Consolidated’s information technology department include: Joe Hillemeyer, Plover, has joined the company as systems analyst; Melanie Kranig, Stevens Point, has been hired as systems analyst; and Kimberly Spencer, Stevens Point, has joined the company as a technology analyst. Doug Anderson, of Superior, who joined Consolidated in 1996 as safety representative, has transferred from the Wisconsin Rapids Division to Lake Superior Papers in Duluth. John Culhane, Wisconsin Rapids, has been promoted to wood procurement manager in Consolidated’s Timberlands Division. Appointments at the Wisconsin Rapids Division include: Jason Zblewski, Plover, has joined the division as a corporate process engineer; Clarence Arnold, Wisconsin Rapids, has returned to the No. 16 paper machine as assistant paper machine/materials superintendent; Allen Harger, Wisconsin Rapids, has been appointed assistant superintendent, No. 14 line. Appointments at the Biron Division include: Karl Allworden, Nekoosa, has been promoted to paper machine superintendent, Nos. 23 and 24; Scott Clark, Wisconsin Rapids, has joined the division as corporate process engineer. Thomas Weidman, Stevens Point, has been promoted to paper machine shift supervisor, No. 34, at the Steven’s Point Division. Appointments at the Wisconsin River Division include: Jim Sheibley, Stevens Point, will be moving to the division as assistant production manager-process; Eli Swanson, Wisconsin Rapids, has been hired as a corporate process engineer. Jay Barron, Norway, Mich., has joined the company as a process engineer at the Niagra division.

 

GEORGIA-PACIFIC

James P. “Jim”Kelly, was elected as a director of the corporation by Georgia-Pacific Corp.’s board of directors. Kelly is chairman and chief executive officer for the United Parcel Service. Charles C. Tufano, was promoted to senior vice president—paper distribution. Tufano remains president of Unisource, a position he was appointed to in connection with the Unisource acquisition.

 

P.H. GLATFELTER

David P. Dumbleton, Ph.D., was announced as director—engineered products business;

 

Gregory C. Martin has joined the P.H. Glatfelter Co. as director of marketing for the Glatfelter Division;

Mark W. Pitts was promoted to national sales manager; Philip H. Glatfelter IV was promoted to director of sales—converting group; Thomas J. Wernoch was promoted to director of sales—book publishing group, Union, N.J.; and Michael R. Morrissy was appointed key account manager—book publishing group.

 

HARMAC PACIFIC

Harmac Pacific Inc., announced the resignation of Ralph Leverton, president and CEO. Michael Flannery, who is the company’s chairman and CEO, will assume the role of President.

 

Inland paperboard & packaging

James L. Grantham has been promoted to the position of vice president and general manager of its Orange, Texas mill. Grantham replaces Thomas Stroup who has accepted the position of manager of technical services for Inland’s Paperboard Group. Willis J. Potts Jr. was appointed vice president and general manager of the Rome, Ga. mill. Potts replaces Donald F. Jones Jr who has elected to retire.

 

International paper

The Fine Papers division of International Paper has named David B. Schwartz national sales manager for Strathmore Papers. He will be responsible for U.S. sales of Strathmore’s complete line of premium text, cover, and writing papers, and will oversee Strathmore’s field sales team. Kerri Bautista was named to the position of specification sales consultant for the Beckett and Strathmore Papers brands in the Chicago area. Strathmore Papers has appointed Chuck Ronnenburg district sales representative for the Mid-Atlantic region. Linda Schoepf was named to the position of specification sales consultant for the Beckett and Strathmore Papers brands in the Atlanta market.

 

MOHAWK

Craig Slemp, has been promoted fROm director to vice president, marketing & business planning; Joe O’Connor has been promoted to vice president, sales/administration; John O’Connor has been promoted to vice president, sales/customer service.

 

NEXFOR INC

Charles B. Gordon was appointed vice president corporate affairs. Mr. Gordon will be primarily responsible for the management of internal and external communications and public affairs. He will continue to be responsible for communications activities at Nexfor’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Norbord Industries Inc.

 

PACIFICA PAPERS

Kenneth A. Shields, chairman of the board of directors, has resigned the chairman’s position while remaining a director. He has been succeeded by J. Trevor Johnstone, who has been a director of the company since its formation.

 

POPE & TALBOT

Pope & Talbot, Inc. announced the resignation of Ralph Leverton, vice president, general manager, of its Pulp Products Division.

 

PORT TOWNSEND

Joseph M. Beers, has been promoted to the position of area manager—converting. In this role he will supervise production products at the company’s bag plants in Portland, Ore., and Port Townsend, Wash.

 

SAPPI

The CFO for Sappi Fine Paper North America, Trevor Larkan, will move to London from September as CFO of Sappi Fine Paper plc. Sappi Fine Paper plc, whose main role is to give global focus and direction to the group’s fine paper business, will also establish a marketing division and take over product development, sales, and marketing for the Fine Paper Group. Former Union Camp executive John T. Heald Jr., was named executive vice president of operations. Heald, formerly executive vice president of Union Camp’s $1.7 billion packaging group, will take overall responsibility fore Sappi’s coated, uncoated, and specialty paper businesses as well as mill operations. Henry “Hank” Mollenhauer, senior vice president marketing and general manager of the coated graphic paper division of Sappi Fine Paper North America, will become director of marketing for Sappi Fine Paper plc from October.

 

SONOCO

Harris E. DeLoach Jr., formerly executive vice president of Sonoco, has been elected senior executive vice president. Mr. DeLoach was elected an executive vice president in 1996 and was elected to the company’s board of directors in 1998. J.C. Rhodes, division vice president, international operations—Latin America, Australia, and Asia, has been elected a corporate vice president.

CERESTAR

Ken Brown was appointed vice president to develop the U.S. market; Henri Lalanne currently commercial manager of Cerestar France, will be based in Cerestar’s international headquarters in Paris and will steer the worldwide development of the market for the company’s specialty paper and corrugating starches.

 

GENCORP

Dr. James L. Vaughn was appointed to the position of mgr., carpet technology and technical marketing of GenCorp’s Performance Chemicals business. Vaughn will assume the responsibility currently held by John Bigdany, who is retiring.

 

MAXSON

Maxson Automatic Machinery Co., a manufacturer of rotary cutters and sheet handling systems for the converting industry appointed Austin P. Apperson as sales manager.

Dennis Boyd was appointed to the position of director of marketing, Paper Chemicals, Industrial Starch Division. He is responsible for worldwide marketing of specialty starches to the paper industry.

In response to company growth OMNI associates announced Louis K. Wilhelm as industrial services senior consultant.

 

PAPEREXCHANGE.COM

Paperexchange.com announced that Roger Stone has made an equity investment and joined the Paperexchange Board of Directors. Mr. Stone was former chairman and CEO of Stone Container Corp.

 

PEMCO

Greg Lechner was appointed regional sales manager for sheeting and packaging for the eastern half of the U.S. Lechner will be responsible for servicing customers in the fine papers and paperboard industries with Pemco’s sheeters, ream wrappers, labelers, stackers, accumulators, inspection/rejection equipment, and case packers/lidders.

 

SUNDS DEFIBRATOR

Thore Englund was appointed vice president, corporate communications within the Sunds Defibrator Group.

 

ASSOCIATIONS

 

PIMA

Nicki Slusser has been named the new national president of PIMA. This is the first time in the history of PIMAthat the organization has chosen a women as its president. Ms. Slusser is currently the manufacturing support manager at Champion’s Courtland, Alabama pulp and paper mill.

 

RETIREMENTS

 

BOISE CASCADE

Richard B. Parrish announced his retirement at the end of July. Mr. Parish joined Bosie Cascade in the wood products business in 1961, shortly after graduating from the University of Washington. Parrish is widely recognized as a leader in the building products industry, serving in the past as chairman of the Western Wood Products Association and currently as chairman of the American Lumber Standards Committee.
