U.S. paper and paperboard production slipped 195,000 tons from April to 7.75 million tons, the American Forest & Paper Assn. reported. Both the paper and board sectors had lower production on a seasonally unadjusted basis. So far this year industry production has been flat compared with 1998.

U.S. newsprint production was down more than 5% from a year ago and lagged 2.3% through the first five months of 1999. Canadian shipments declined more than 5% from April to May and were slightly down from May 1998.

Containerboard production through May lagged the same period last year by 1.2%, although box shipments were up, owing to inventory drawdowns.

Total U.S. woodpulp production registered a gain of just over 5% in May from April to 5.27 million tons; paper grade market pulp production rose 7% from April and was slightly higher than May a year ago. Woodpulp exports declined 4% in April from the previous month and were down 11% January through April 1999 compared with the 1998 period.
