Rolland Inc., Saint Jerome, Que., has started up a new Mentor automated guided vehicle system (AGVS) to take paper rolls to a roll wrapping system. At the winder, parent rolls are grouped and picked up by the AGVS, which then carries them 400 ft to the wrapping line. There, the AGVS centers the rolls on the infeed conveyor of the wrapping line.

Mead Corp., Phenix City, Ala., has ordered a steam stripper system from Goslin, a division of Thermo Black Clawson. The project will help the mill meet EPA Cluster Rule requirements for air emissions and effluent limitations.

Crown Vantage Inc., has purchased two Pilao RTD-660 26-in. double disc refiners from the Lawton Co. for its Milford, N.J., mill. The new refiners incorporate Pilao’s patented Tri-Disc system.

E.B. Eddy Forest Products Ltd., Espanola, Ont., has ordered bale moisture/weight measuring systems from Forte Technology for its No. 3 and No. 4 pulp machines. The new systems measure moisture and A/D commercial weight of all pulp bales. They also provide profiles of moisture across the dryer.

Tenneco Packaging Corp., Filer City, Mich., has added two fully automatic Model 44 linear-brush showers from James Ross Ltd. for felt cleaning. These high-pressure showers are self-brushing and purging.

Spruce Falls Inc., a subsidiary of Tembec Inc. located in Kapuskasing, Ont., has achieved certification to the ISO 14001 environmental standard for its newsprint mill and woodlands and sawmill operations.

Consolidated Papers Inc. has started up a 35-ton capacity, laser guided vehicle from Mentor AGVS at its Niagara Div. in Niagara, Wis. The vehicle is the first of its kind in North America and is used to carry jumbo reels between the paper machine and a new supercalender located in another building.

U.S. Paper Mills Corp. has contracted with the Lawton Co. for an evaluation of the line shaft on its No. 1 paper machine in DePere, Wis. Lawton will review and analyze current and projected horsepower requirements, line shaft components, and critical speeds.

Donohue Forest Products Inc., Sheldon, Texas, has chosen Valmet to rebuild the winders on its No. 5 and No. 6 paper machines. The winders will be rebuilt to a WinBelt windup configuration, and the upgrades are aimed at producing superior quality rolls with up to 50-in. diameters after conversion of the furnish to 85% deinked pulp. The mill also plans improvements to upgrade the No. 7 paper machine reel to Valmet ReelControl 200 technology. In addition, the No. 7 winder will receive a new unwind drive, lead-in roll assembly, and other improvements.

Mead Corp. has selected Mountain Systems Inc.’s GradeBook application suite as a corporate standard for quality management and plant floor optimization. After Mead’s SAP R/3 rollout, GradeBook will provide a window into process, quality, and enterprise data at the plant level using SAP’s BAPI ActiveX technology.

Rock-Tenn Corp. has ordered dryer heads from the Lawton Co. for its No. 4 paper machine in St. Paul, Minn. Lawton will design, cast, machine and ASME code the 42-in.-dia. heads for 75 psi operating pressure.

St. Anne-Nackawic Pulp Co., Nackawic, N.B., has installed a Vincent Corp. VP-16 screw press. It is used to dewater reject fiber that was previously being taken to landfill in a dripping wet condition. After pressing, the fiber is burned in the mill’s hog fuel boiler. The Nackawic mill produces 800 tpd of kraft pulp.

Champion International Corp. has installed a two-roll Valmet Opti-Hard calender on its No. 4 linerboard machine in its Roanoke Rapids, N.C., mill. This calender replaces two multi-nip calenders and was installed to improve reel structure uniformity, surface smoothness, and sheet threading. Dry end modifications by Valmet include the reconfiguration of the third dryer section and felt runs.

Weyerhaeuser Co. has selected Dolphin Software’s Comply Plus system to supply the company’s material safety data sheets (MSDS), giving employees fast access to chemical information and making it easier to comply with workplace safety laws. The information is available through the company’s wide area network (WAN) and replaces the hand-managed, bound series of notebooks at the company’s 250 locations.

Alliance Forest Products, Dolbeau, Que., has ordered a Double Doctor from James Ross Ltd. It is 263-in. wide and will be used in the couch position of the No. 2 paper machine. This wet end unit is designed to provide increased solids off the couch, a reduction in breaks, reduced two-sidedness, and improved moisture profile.

Unipak S.A. de C.V., Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, has ordered a Turboseparator ATS 200 from Voith Sulzer. The Turboseparator will be installed on the No. 2 paper machine to handle increasing production capacity.

Papelera Industrial Potosina S.A. de C.V., San Luis Potosi, Mexico, has started up a steam and condensate system from Thermal Systems Group as part of a rebuild for its No. 1 paper machine. The cascade system features dryer pressure control to accommodate the maximum code pressure rating of the existing dryer cylinders while maximizing production of corrugating medium and linerboard.

Dong Guan Nine Dragons Paper Industries Co. Ltd., Dong Guan, Guangdong, China, has ordered an advanced linerboard machine from Valmet. With a capacity of 1,000 tpd of brown kraft linerboard, it will be the largest linerboard machine in China. Startup is scheduled for May/June 2000.
