BLUE RIDGE PAPER PRODUCTS

George Henson has been appointed to the position of vice president, Mill Division;

Thomas Carter has been named vice president, Human Resources; and Richard Lozyniak has been named chief financial officer. These managers join the existing management team comprised of Howard Gidez, president, DairyPak/ vice president of sales and marketing; and Philip Brown, general manager of the Waynesville extruding plant.

 

 

CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL

Larry Glover was named resident manager of Caribou Pulp & Paper Co., in Quensel, B.C., Canada. Laura Des Enfants as manager, national coated specification sales for the Champion Web line of coated papers. The following were named specification sales representatives for the Champion Web line of coated web papers: Nicole Petty, is based in Boston and will serve the Boston metro area;A. Lee Clark, is based in Atlanta and will serve Atlanta, Charlotte, and Miami. Stacey Rimassa was named manager of creative services for the Champion Web line.

 

ERVING PAPER MILLS

Morris Housen has been appointed COO at Erving Industries In. Morris is the third generation of Housen’s to be involved in the leadership of the company.

 

GEORGIA-PACIFIC

Georgia-Pacific Atlanta, Ga., has promoted Charles E. Hodges to general manager of Leaf River Pulp Operations, New Augusta, Miss. Georgia-Pacific Port Edwards, Wash., has promoted Val Troyanowski shipping supervisor in the finishing, distribution, and planning department.

 

GREIF BROS.

John S. Lilak has been named executive vice president for the Containerboard & Corrugated Products business of Greif Bros. Corp.

 

INTERNATIONAL PAPERS

The Fine Papers division has announced the appointment of three account managers for Hammermill Papers. They will represent Via by Hammerhill, Brite-Hue, Regalia, and other Hammermill premium papers. LaTascha Willie Foster will be based in New York City and will service the New York metro area. John Walsh will be based in Atlanta and will service Atlanta and its surrounding areas. Marguerite Harris will be based in Chicago and will service Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis markets.

 

MEAD

Timothy R. McLevish was elected to vice president and CFO effective December 1, 1999. McLevish currently serves as Mead vice president, finance and treasurer. He will succeed William R. Graber who is retiring from the company on November 30, 1999.

 

MOHAWK PAPER MILLS

George W. Milner has been promoted to vice president, Energy, Environmental, and Government affairs at Mohawk Paper Mills. Milner will act as liaison to outside agencies and businesses in all matters dealing with the company’s energy requirements and energy supply services.

 

POTLATCH CORPORATION

Potlatch Corp, has announced the retirement of Wood Products Group vice president Thomas J. Smrekar and the appointment of Richard K. Kelly as his replacement. Michael W. DeGenring has been named to a newly created position of executive vice president, finance.

 

WILLAMETTE INDUSTRIES

Greg Hawley has been appointed to the position of executive vice president, chief financial officer, replacing J.A. Parsons when he retires in November of 1999. Robert Spears has been appointed as pulp sales representative, Pulp & Fine Paper sales. Spears will be responsible for the sale of bleached hardwood market pulp to accounts in the U.S. He will be based out of the East Coast regional office in Fort Mill, S.C.

 

PLAINWELL

Jeffrey A. Arnesen was promoted to senior vice president, chief financial officer. Prior to his promotion, Arnesen served as senior vice president Finance, and vice president, Corporate controller for Plainwell Inc., responsible for both finance and investor relations. Bryan T. Griffin was named corporate controller

 

FRASER PAPERS

Mark P. Roy has been appointed general sales manager text, cover, and commercial papers—eastern region. His territory will encompass from Maine to Florida, and east of the Mississippi River.

 

LONGVIEW FIBRE COMPANY

Michael L. Martin has been promoted to superintendent of the bag plant at Longview Fibre’s Spanish Fork, Utah packaging operations.

 

WEYERHAEUSER

Three new members were elected to Weyerhaeuser’s board of directors. Joining the board in October are: Robert J. Herbold, Microsoft Corporation executive vice president and COO; Arnold Langbo, Kellog Co chairman; and Clayton Yeutter, former U.S Secretary of Agriculture and former U.S Trade Representative and counsel with Hogan & Harston, a Washington, D.C. law firm.

 

SUPPLIER COMPANIES

APPLETON MILLS

Appleton, Wis., has promoted Tom Rietvelt to president, Appleton Mills Forming Fabrics and Kai Chui to president, product, and business development.

 

ASHLAND CHEMICAL

Richard A. Roth was named marketing manager. Roth will ne responsible for managing all aspects of the division’s marketing activities. David H. Armstrong was named director of electronic commerce. Ashland has several initiatives underway and expects to begin transacting business over the Internet in 1999.

 

DOW

Frank Oosterbaan was promoted to the position of Global Supply Chain director for Emulsion Polymers. He replaces Brad Gray, who was recently named Global Supply Chain director for EDC/VCM & ECU.

 

HERCULES

George Mackenzie was named executive vice president, Hercules Inc., president, Chemical Specialities and CFO; Dominick W. DiDonna was named executive vice president, Hercules Inc., president, Process Chemicals; Larry V. Rankin was named executive vice president, Hercules Inc., president, Functional Chemicals; June B. Barry was named executive vice president, Hercules Inc, president and CFA; Israel J. Floyd was named vice president, secretary, and general counsel; Harry J. Tucci was named executive vice president, and CDO; and William T. Drury, Jr. was named vice president, Investor Relations.

 

MILLENNIUM INORGANIC

Stuart G. Breslow was named vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Millennium Inorganic Chemicals He will be replacing the retired Samuel Friedman.

 

NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL

Roger Jeffcoat was appointed to the position of senior divisional vice president, Natural Polymer Research and Biotechnology for the Starch Division. James P. Zallie was named divisional vice president, Asia. This new position expands his responsibilities for managing National’s Food and Industrial Starch businesses throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

 

VIB SYSTEMS

Daniel R. Vellieux was appointed vice president, Sales and Marketing. In this role, Vellieux will be responsible for VIBsales in North America and marketing worldwide.

 

RETIREMENTS

MILLENNIUM INORGANIC

Samuel Friedman recently announced his retirement.

 

NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL

James A. Kennedy recently announced his retirement as chairman and CEO. He had served with the company for 37years. He retired form the ICI, PLC board of directors as well.

 

POTLACH

Wood Products Group vice president Thomas J. Smrekar, who has been group v.p. since 1992, elected to take early retirement at the end of 1999. He will continue on special assignments until the effective date of his retirement.

 

WILLAMETTE INDUSTRIES

J.A. Parsons is planning to retire in November of 1999. Parsons, a 33-year employee of Willamette Industries, has been executive vice president, CFO since 1989. *

Paper Industry Hall of Fame Inducts New Members

The Paper Industry Hall of Fame (PIHF) honors committee and board of directors announced its 1999 inductees at its fifth annual awards ceremony this past September. George P. Mueller, Hall of Fame chairman, served as master of ceremonies, and Thomas C. Norris, chairman of the board, P.H. Glatfelter Co., was guest speaker for the Appleton, Wis., event.

Since 1995, PIHF has honored individuals, living or deceased, who have been instrumental in helping the world’s paper industry flourish. Recognition is based on contributions in the areas of technology, economics, leadership, academics, service, marketing, and product or process development.

Seven inductees were selected for 1999 and honored at the Appleton awards ceremony. These were:

Stephen J. Baisch (retired)—founder and president, S.J. Baisch Assoc., Kaukauna, Wis.
H. Lyman (Tad) Bretting—president and CEO, C.G. Bretting Mfg. Co. Inc., Ashland, Wis.
Charles B. Clark (deceased)—founder, Kimberly-Clark Corp. (originally Kimberly, Clark & Co.), Neenah, Wis.
Herbert Ortner (retired)—senior vice president, Voith Sulzer Papiermaschinen GmbH, Heidenheim, Germany.
Joseph D. Parker (deceased)—associate director of research, Beloit Corp., Beloit, Wis.
Reinhardt N. Sabee—founder, chairman, CEO, and president, R. Sabee Co., Appleton, Wis.
John G. Strange (deceased)—president, Institute of Paper Chemistry, Appleton, Wis.
