  U.S. paper and paperboard production in June of 8.03 million tons was up a fractional 0.2% (unadjusted) compared with year-ago levels. Paper production was flat at 3.77 million tons while paperboard was up 0.5% to 4.26 million tons. U.S. market pulp shipments in June were 732,000 tons, up 3.3 %.

Newsprint production was off 2.4% vs a year ago for the first six months of 1999. Printing/writing paper shipments increased a tiny 0.4% through June.

Fiber box shipments, as measured by the Fibre Box Assn., were up 2.1% during the first half of 1999 compared with a year ago, but up 1.2% on an average-week basis. Folding box board production for domestic use was 4.3% ahead of year-ago levels for the January through June period, paced by an 11.3% increase in unbleached kraft.

In Canada, woodpulp production was at 1.99 million mtons in June, a slight 0.2% increase over June 1998. Year-to-date production through June was up 4%. Newsprint shipments were up 1% for the six months and the operating rate for June was 89%. Total paper and paperboard production for June was 1.58 million mtons, up 2% over last year.
