AUSTRIA Andritz and Hadwaco have signed a joint marketing and research agreement to develop new systems for water loop closure and internal process water purification. The systems optimize the production process to produce clean pulp and concentrated effluent.

 

BELGIUM The Indian company, Dodia Establishment, is looking to expand its sales of galvanized and copper-coated flat stitching wire in Belgium. The wire is used to staple corrugated paper boxes, board and cartons.

 

BRAZIL Finland's Jaakko Pöyry and the other owners of Jaakko Pöyry Engenharia in Brazil have reached a preliminary agreement to divide the engineering and forest product activities of the Brazilian firm. Jaakko Pöyry will manage the forest product activities under a new company, Jaakko Pöyry Celulose e Papel Technologia. After the restructuring, the Finnish group will no longer own a shareholding in the engineering company.

 

CANADA Kafus Environmental Industries and its subsidiary, the CanFibre group, have successfully produced medium density fiberboard (MDF) from 100% post consumer waste. The MDF was manufactured at the subsidiary's Riverside California AllGreen facility and is expected to meet or even exceed MDF industry standards, the companies said.

 

CANADA GL&V recently acquired Dorr-Oliver from Krauss-Maffrei. GL&V hopes the acquisition will balance out the company's growth segments and reduce the risk of dependency on one market sector. The deal has the potential to increase GL&V's revenues by $80 million.

 

FINLAND PI Consulting and the PI group of Finland, along with TBP-Piesslienger of Austria and its Polish subsidiary, Interprojekt, have agreed to cooperate on several engineering projects. The projects relate to the pulp and paper industry, the chemical sector and energy production. The work will be concentrated on German speaking countries within Europe.

 

FINLAND BASF plans to build a new plant for paper chemicals in Finland in 2000, with startup scheduled for 2002. The plant will specialize in paper coating dispersion chemicals. As part of the new project, the company will give up its 49% stake in the paper coating dispersions producer, Raision Lateske of Finland, to its partner, Raisio Chemicals.

 

FINLAND Stora Enso has officially opened its newly expanded research center in Imatra, Finland. The group invested FIM 60.8 million ($10.9 million) in upgrading the center. The research facility is responsible for developing liquefied packaging board, digital printing, pilot coating, laminating papers and business information. Imatra is the main provider for research and development services for the group's mills in Finland.

 

GERMANY Zanders Feinpapiere has developed a recyclable coated packaging paper without a polyethylene layer. Matt coated on the front, the paper's special dispersion on the back side offers an excellent barrier to steam. This new packaging paper is available in a basis weight of 105 g/m‰.

 

GERMANY Haindl recently took delivery of a pulp bale handling system, pulper feed equipment and a screw conveyor system from FMW for the new PM 3 at its Ausburg mill. While the bale handling system has a capacity of 380 tons/day, the wastepaper handling/pulper feed system is designed to deal with 570 tons/day. The screw conveyor system has a design capacity of 415 tons/day of deinked pulp and 300 tons/day of mechanical pulp. Startup of the new PM is scheduled for May 2000.

 

SWEDEN AssiDomän has extended its links with Industrial and Financial Systems (IFS) by signing a framework agreement with the software provider. IFS is one of the companies engaged to replace and modernize AssiDomän’s administrative system. The software has been specially developed for the forest industry and will be implemented at the company's units in Sweden and the rest of Europe.

 

SWEDEN Two of Holmen Paper's mills, Wargön and Braviken, have achieved full compliance with the environmental management system ISO 14001. The company is also aiming to achieve the same standard at its Hallsta mill.

 

SWEDEN Södra is one of the leading companies for quality eco-audits, according to Deloitte & Touche. The consulting firm found that eco-audits in Sweden are constantly improving as companies made an effort to highlight environmental policies.


 

TOP 150 CORRECTION PPI would like to point out that the currency conversion rate used for Chile in September's Top 150 was incorrect. The average for 1998 should have been Peso 460.29, according to the International Monetary Fund. Inflation was not high enough to justify the use of the year-end rate. This means that Empresas CMPC should be ranked #54 instead of #66 and Celulosa Arauco y Constitución should be ranked #82 instead of #98.
