Little Rapids Corp., Shawano, Wis., has purchased a HOG pulping unit from Voith Sulzer to increase production from one of its pulpers. The installation will take place in mid-1999.

Fletcher Challenge’s Crofton, B.C., mill is upgrading its No. 3 paper machine to improve lightweight runnability. As part of this project, the mill is enhancing its seven existing pressure screens with Andritz components, including wedgewire slotted screens. System startup is scheduled for June 1999.

Gulf States Paper Corp., Demopolis, Ala., has selected Ahlstrom Machinery’s Fiberline Div. to supply a hardwood screening system and a softwood Eop reactor system. Ahlstrom Pumps was selected to supply MC pumps and Ahlmix mixers for both the hardwood and softwood lines. This supply is part of several projects at the Demopolis mill relating to Cluster Rule compliance. Startup for the new equipment is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 1999.

Lake Utopia Paper, Saint George, N.B., has installed a Carotek event capturing system (ECS) to reduce downtime caused by randomly-occurring process events. Lake Utopia’s ECS is a fully self-contained mobile unit with four cameras. The system can be applied at any point in the papermaking process.

For two paper machines at its Bennington, N.H., mill, Monadnock Paper Mills has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing.

Willamette Industries, Albany, Ore., has purchased screening equipment for its recycled fiber plant from Voith Sulzer. The scope of the supply includes one Turboseparator ATS 500, two Combisorters, two VPS pressure screens with C-bar cylinders, and one conversion of a Selectifier screen to C-bar rotor and cylinder technology. The new equipment was installed to decrease energy consumption and fiber losses at the Albany mill, while improving the overall quality of the OCC plant.

Gilman Paper Co., St. Marys, Ga., has signed a 15-year contract with Trigen-BioPower for the supply of high-pressure steam. Trigen-BioPower has begun construction of a new steam generation facility that is designed to burn primary paper sludge and waste wood at the mill. The steam contractor will finance, own, and operate the facility. Commercial operation is anticipated for the first quarter of 2000.

International Paper, Vicksburg, Miss., has ordered a Super TurnKnife adjustable knife chipping system from Iggesund Tools. The Vicksburg mill has a kraft pulp operation with two continuous digesters and a high-quality kraft linerboard mill that produces over 500,000 tpy.

To address speed limitations and increase production on its No. 4 paper machine, Blandin Paper Co., Grand Rapids, Minn., has replaced 19 rotary dryer siphons with Deublin stationary siphons and has added 11 Deublin dryer turbulence bars. The new equipment was added at the suggestion of a Beloit MillPro Services engineer. Since the new equipment was added, machine speed has risen from 2,800 fpm to 3,200 fpm on the Beloit paper machine. In addition, the one-day base paper record of 252.8 tons was broken when the machine produced 285.2 tons in one day.

Georgia-Pacific, Cedar Springs, Ga., has chosen Iggesund Tools to supply a Super TurnKnife adjustable knife system for its woodyard. The Cedar Springs chip mill produces 2.4 million tpy.

Solvay Paperboard, Syracuse, N.Y., has received ISO 9001 registration. The company currently produces 165,000 tpy of 100% recycled linerboard. A second, new paper machine is scheduled for startup in August 1999. This will increase total linerboard production to 400,000 tpy by 2001.

Crown Vantage, St. Francisville, La., has purchased a second 72-in.-dia. by 166-in.-face Recrepe dryer from VanTek Inc.

Visy Paper Corp., Staten Island, N.Y., has purchased a Zone Shower from James Ross Ltd. This patented system allows the mill to control the on-machine cleaning of paper machine clothing.

Alabama River Newsprint, Perdue Hill, Ala., has purchased Andritz components to retrofit the pressure screens on its recently rebuilt TMP line. In addition to supplying a new secondary screen, Andritz will upgrade the existing pressure screens with modified rotors and new wedgewire slotted screens.

For the No. 3 paper machine at its Lyons Falls, N.Y., mill, Lyons Falls Pulp & Paper has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing.

Rock-Tenn Co., Lynchburg, Va., has purchased a Combisorter from Voith Sulzer for its OCC plant. The equipment will replace existing vibration screens. Startup is scheduled for June 1999.

For its No. 14 paper machine, E.B. Eddy, Ottawa, Ont., has ordered two patented Zone Shower dryer fabric cleaning systems from James Ross Ltd.

Georgia-Pacific Corp., Big Island, Va., has purchased the latest Contaminex CMV model from Voith Sulzer. The Contaminex CMV was installed in the TwinPulp III detrashing system of the OCC plant to improve quality.

Sealed Air Corp., Modena, Pa., has contracted with the Lawton Co. for the supply of new gearing on its Modena steamer paper machine.

Westvaco, Wickliffe, Ky., has placed an order with Iggesund Tools for a new wood chipping system for its woodyard. The Wickliffe mill is aiming for productivity gains and better chip quality.
