Dryer section upgrade

The Voith Sulzer DryStar is a dryer section upgrade for existing graphic and packaging grade paper machines. It is easily retrofitted and can be installed in several stages. The upgrade eliminates sheet flutter, improves CD dryness profile, reduces breaks, decreases threading time, eliminates carrier rope threading systems, increases trim width, and provides efficient evaporation and complete pocket ventilation. Self-cleaning DCF filters

Ronningen-Petter’s mechanical, self-cleaning DCF filters remove solids from wet-end additives. In size/film press applications, the filters reduce web breaks and quality upset by maintaining constant differential pressure over time. The filters eliminate process interruptions because they can be cleaned in place. Ronningen-Petter

Portable monitoring system

The Machine Reliability Inspection System (Marlin) gathers, stores, and analyzes plant process and vibration data. From SKF Service Div., Marlin monitors rotating machinery, flow rates, pressure readings, and pH levels. The system consists of a wand-style data collection probe, a hand-held computer, measurement studs, and software for sharing data. A 28-minute training video is available. SKF Service Div.

Data panels and display stations

GE Fanuc Automation offers a full range of operator interface products. Its Cimplicity data panels and display stations can boost the performance of existing systems while providing the power, responsiveness, and flexibility needed in advanced manufacturing systems. Low-, mid-range, and high-end data panel series are available, as well as three display station models. GE Fanuc Automation

Sheeter

The MSP sheeter from Maxson Automatic features a dual motor drive system and a cut-to-register system for preprinted stock. It claims sheet length accuracy of +/- 0.015 in., a squareness accuracy of +/- 0.020 in., and speeds up to 1,000 fpm. The sheeter can handle rolls up to 56-in.-wide and has a sheet length range from 15 in. to 60 in. Maxson Automatic Machinery Co.

Controller

Honeywell’s UDC 2300—a low-cost, 1/4 DIN microprocessor-based controller—controls process variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, level, and rotation in simple loops or complex multi-loop applications. Standard features are auto tuning with fuzzy logic overshoot suppression, input/output isolation, and a universal AC power supply. Honeywell Industrial Automation and Control

PID loop tuning

ExperTune PID analyzer/tuner creates reports of loop analysis in Microsoft Word. Templates or customized reports include graphics and tuning values, as well as a summary and conclusion based on the information entered. The software includes simulation, modeling, robustness, linearization, and frequency response tools. ExperTune Inc.

Cooling water treatment program

Hercules Pulp and Paper Div.’s halogen stable Continuum AEC treatment program improves scale and corrosion protection for alkaline pH cooling water systems—even in the presence of chlorine and bromine. It withstands high temperatures, high hardness levels, and high halogen residuals. Benefits include lower operating costs, extended equipment life, reduced environmental impact, and chlorine stability that permits use of microbial control agents. Hercules Pulp and Paper Div.

Laboratory information system

LabSystems is offering a brochure explaining its new laboratory information management system—SampleManager LIMS. The Windows-based system integrates with desktop and laboratory instrumentation and interfaces with process modeling and optimization systems. The brochure also includes information about training services, implementation, validation, support, and regulatory compliance. LabSystems

Transmitter isolation valve

The transmitter isolation valve from PBM prevents liquor vapor from coating, solidifying, and distorting transmitter readings. Downtime and maintenance are reduced, and more accurate readings are provided. The valve has a purge port and two milled flats on the ball facing the tank. With this valve design, no process interruption occurs and the transmitter can get reliable readings. PBM Inc.

Forming technology

AES VID (velocity induced drainage) forming technology creates intense activity within the sheet as it comes off the headbox, allowing greater drainage without mat formation. The results are improved sheet strength, uniformity, and appearance, as well as lower drying costs, and better runnability at a significantly lower cost than other solutions. AES

Event capturing system

Carotek’s event capturing system (ECS) video cameras capture the fastest-occurring random events on high-resolution digital video. This enhances the Carotek ECS’ ability to capture the root cause of randomly occurring web breaks. Mills using ECS have reduced random web breaks from unknown causes by 90% in 60 days. Carotek

Shower water cleanup

Making shower water cleanup easy, KDF’s patented Redox process media filters out the things that plug, corrode, and disable shower nozzles. KDF Redox copper-zinc media traps contaminants, destroys microorganisms, and converts harmful chemicals into harmless by-products. KDF

Pressure screens

The new Andritz FiberSentry screens offer better separation performance over a wider range of operational parameters. So, it allows the user to simultaneously meet demands for higher productivity and higher stock quality—no matter how inconsistent the application conditions. The unique parabolic rotor body, conical baffles and wedge wire screen basket combine to deliver increased efficiency, capacity, and performance. Andritz

Vacuum pump

The new low-profile SV-5986 vacuum pump from Somarakis offers a standard saturated air capacity of 27,000 CFM. The pump features a new tri-point inlet connection that allows service connections to be made from the top, either side, or all three sides. And, as with all large pump designs from Somarakis, discharge can be piped to either side or the bottom. Somarakis Inc.

Shoe press belt

The Ventabelt from Albany International is a grooved shoe press belt designed to assist in optimal water removal in the long nip press. More void volume in the nip increases dewatering capacity and yields a drier sheet. Benefits include increased speeds and gross production, cleaner running felts, reduced sheet blowing in single-felted runs, and reduced wad damage in both belts and press fabrics. Albany International
