  U.S. paper and paperboard production for the seven months through July was essentially flat with the same period in 1998 and totaled 55.49 million tons. Paperboard production was 29.55 million tons and paper was 25.93 million. July shipments of both paper and board slipped slightly from June.

U.S. woodpulp production gained in July from the previous month and was 5.40 million tons, compared to 5.29 million. Production of market woodpulp was also up by more than 3% to 722,000 tons from June.

Containerboard production in the U.S. lagged its year-ago volume by 1.3% through July, reflecting a 1.4% increase in production for domestic box use and a 17.6% decline in exports. Box shipments were up 1.5% through July. Canadian containerboard shipments were up 12% year-to-date and mill inventories in July dropped to 84,000 mtons, down from 106,000 mtons in 1998.

Production of Canadian woodpulp was up 13% in July compared with the same month last year and stood at 2.19 million mtons. Canadian newsprint production grew 21% in the July-to-July period and was 807,000 mtons.
