GEORGIA–PACIFIC

Roger H. Brear , v.p., Ashdown operations, was elected to group v.p., manufacturing, communication papers. Brear will have responsibility for the company’s communication papers manufacturing operations at Ashdown, Ark., Kalamazoo, Mich., Nekoosa and Port Edwards, Wis., and Port Hudson, La.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER
Joseph Terry has been hired as district sales executive, Strathmore Papers, the Fine Papers division of the company. Terry will promote and sell Strathmore in the Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Central Pennsylvania markets. Peter B. Wilson, Jr. has been named catalog marketing manager, coated papers. In this position, Wilson will develop market strategies, products and services for the company’s catalog customers.

MADISON INTERNATIONAL
Paul Fedkenheuer has joined the company as a sales representative for the company, which is the sole U.S. representative for six European mill organizations: Myllykoski Paper and Metsa–Serla in Finland, MD Papier and Lang in Germany, Biberist in Switzerland, and UK Paper in the United Kingdom.

PLAINWELL PAPER
Michael J. Rogles, has been appointed midwest sales manager, with sales responsibilities in seven midwest states. Tony Modory has been named Western manager of Digital Inkjet Products. Gary Hayden has been promoted to pres. of the company. Jerry B. Jacobsen has been promoted to the position of sr. v.p. and GM of the newly created Consumer Business unit.

YUPO
Paul Mitcham has been hired as the new national marketing manager. Micham steps in to replace Michael Cafiero, who has moved to the position of northeast regional sales mgr.

GILMAN PAPER
The company has announced several appointments in the sales and marketing organization. Jim Yockey has been appointed v.p., national accounts and export sales. Jeff Knouse has been named v.p., field sales mgr.

Harris E. DeLoach, Jr., sr. exec. v.p., has been elected COO, effective immediately.

PACTIV
James D. Morris has been named v.p. and GM of Protective and Flexible Packaging for the company, formerly Tenneco Packaging. John Schwab, currently v.p. and GM, North American Protective Packaging, will assume a new and expanded role as v.p. and GM, Consumer Products. Pete Lazaredes will assume an expanded role as v.p. and GM of the Foodservice, Supermarket, and Institutional Packaging business group adding manufacturing, engineering, and logistics to his existing responsibilities for sales and marketing.

 

ASSOCIATIONS

INSTITUTE OF SCRAP RECYCLING INDUSTRIES (ISRI)

Sam W. Hummelstein, pres. of Hummelstein Iron & Metal Inc., Jonesboro, Ark., was elected to a two–year term as national chairperson on March 16, 2000. Mr. Hummelstein had served as ISRI’s first v.p. since 1998. Other national officers elected to two–year terms were chairperson–elect, Charles Williams, Jr., pres., Charles Williams and Son Inc., Richmond, Va.; vice chairperson, Joel Denbo, chief manager–operations, Tennessee Valley Recycling, Decatur, Ala.; and secretary/treasurer, Frank J. Cozzi, pres., Cozzi Iron & Metal Inc., Chicago, Ill.

NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR AIR AND STREAM IMPROVEMENT (NCASI)
Steven R. Rogel, chairman, pres., and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Co., has been elected chairman of the Board of Governors. Rogel succeeds John Dillon, chairman and CEO of International Paper, who had completed three years of service as chairman.

Max D. Caldwell has been named the new pres. and CEO. Caldwell comes to the company from NAPCO in Terryville, Conn., a Thermo Electron company where he served as pres. and CEO since 1990.

Richard C. Meyerhoefer has been promoted to regional sales mgr., Central and Northeastern U.S.

AES ENGINEERED SYSTEMS
Richard B. Goldy has been appointed production engineering mgr. John A. Neun has been appointed to the position of business unit mgr., cleaning and conditioning. J. Keith Hauser has been appointed sales/applications engineer for FCFormtek.

Wouter L. IJdo has been appointed to the position of technical mgr., new product development–organoclay. IJdo will lead the development of new organoclay rheological additives for existing markets and applications for new markets.

MOTION INDUSTRIES
The company recently announced the following management changes: Zahir Hameer has been named assistant v.p., inventory supply management; John Brazil has been named assistant v.p., branch operations support; Darrel Chaney has been appointed assistant v.p., supplier relations and corporate purchasing; and Gary Garris has been named assistant v.p., distribution center logistics and operations. Management chances in Motion Canada are: Ron Watts has been named v.p., finance and administration; Kelly Kanashiro has been named v.p., purchasing; and Ward Westgate has been named regional mgr. of the West division.

MAXCESS INTERNATIONAL
J. Richard Webb has resigned as chairman and CEO. Webb oversaw the transition of Fife Corp. into Maxcess International, which provides Global Web Management Solutions.

Brian Newsome has been named sales representative for performance additives, and specialty minerals. He is responsible for selling specialty kaolin, attapulgite, and mica to the paint, inks, plastics, and rubber markets in the Mid–Atlantic region from Virginia to Maine.

VOITH SULZER AUTOMATION
Peter Carino has rejoined the company as regional sales mgr. for the Midwestern and Mid–Atlantic U.S.

DOW CHEMICAL
Jamal Attal has been promoted to sr. product development specialist. Theodore Fuhs has been hired as technical service and development technologist. Joann Surma has been named new product development specialist. Gregory Welsch has been named technical service and development project leader.

ASHLAND DISTRIBUTION
Thomas F. Fannon has been appointed director of E–commerce for North American operations.

ARC INTERNATIONAL
The company recently announced the promotion of four senior level managers within their Charlotte facility. Promotions were awarded to: Grant Field, national service mgr.; Barry King, technical services mgr.; Steve Wilkinson, GM; and Steve Woodard, national accounts mgr.

Casey Ebner and Bill Foote have joined the company as technical service representatives in the east region.

GODWIN PUMPS
Jay Thompson was recently named sales engineer at the new Houston, Tex., facility. In his new position, Thompson will develop business among industrial customers with pumping needs in the Texas/Louisiana Gulf coast region.

G.I.W. INDUSTRIES
Dennis Ziegler has been named pres. and CEO of the manufacturer of high–performance, low–maintenance slurry pumps.

AWARDS

PAPTAC


Awards for research and technical papers, and for service to the Canadian pulp and paper industry were conferred during the 86th Annual Meeting of PAPTAC in Montreal. The John S. Bates Memorial Gold Medal, in recognition of long–term contributions to the science and technology of the industry, was presented to Dr. Otto L. Forgacs, who has been a member of PAPTAC since 1959. An Honorary Life Membership was awarded to Mr. Edward H. Snider, who joined PAPTAC in 1950. The I.H. Weldon Award recognizes the best paper presented by a member or members, and was awarded to Pierre R. Bérubé and Eric R. Hall, Pulp and Paper Centre, University of B.C., for their paper ”Treatment of Evaporator Condensate Using a High–Temperature Membrane Bioreactor: Determination of Maximum Operating Temperature and System Costs.” The F.G. Robinson Committee Service Award recognizing outstanding service to the industry and to PAPTAC was awarded to Philip Plouffe, Papier Masson Ltée, who served as chairman of the printing and arts committee in 1998 and 1999. PAPTAC also recognized the following 50–year members who joined the section in 1949: Frank J. Ball, John S. Cheriton, N.C. Cowie, Martin E. Cyr, John Guthrie, Geoff Hughson, Ernest Langins, R.D. Litchfield, A.W. Mackney, A. Marcoux, Dave W. Peat, Henri Renault, A.A. Robertson, Lantier H. Rolland, Borje Steenberg, and T. A. Watchorn. PAPTAC also elected Richard J. Foucault as its chairman for 2000.

 

RETIREMENTS

LONGVIEW FIBRE

Donald C. Stibich is retiring from his position as sr. v.p., paper sales. Stibich will be replaced by Timothy J. Carper, v.p., paper sales.

William J. Fondow is retiring from his position of pres. and CEO after serving the company for the past 13 years.

HERCULES
Larry V. Rankin retired from his position of exec. v.p. as of April 1.

 

OBITUARY

BOWATER INC.

Two contract workers, Dan McCaw Sherer, Sr. and Frankie Lane Pittman, both of South Carolina and employees of SW&B of Auburn, Maine, were killed on March 14 following an explosion at the Catawba, S.C., pulp and paper mill.

EKA CHEMICALS
Steve Svendsen died at his home in West Monroe, La., on Feb. 24. Svendsen worked in the pulp and paper industry for 30 years, most recently as Southwest regional mgr. for Eka Chemicals.
